Good mortgage products, decent customer service face-to-face, worst online banking experience possible.

Good mortgage products, decent customer service face-to-face, worst online banking experience possible.

We opened accounts at Bancorp South when we got a mortgage through them. On the plus side, they don't sell your mortgages. They also have some nice products: one allows you to lower your monthly payment with large lump sum payment against the principal, a second allows you to refinance your loan with only minimal credit checking (you just pay closing costs). We had to move, but I'm sure we would have used these services with the interest rates down this far.

Customer service over the phone is okay, face-to-face is much better if you make a relationship with your loan officer or personal bankers. The people I dealt with knew their products pretty well.

Where this bank really disappoints is their online banking system. It takes one or two nights for any transaction to register in your balances. If you aren't careful this can result in fees. It's happened more than once that I transferred money into an account, then initiated a electronic bill pay, but wound up over-drafting because the transfer came after the payment. Another time I paid a bill, and then paid another the next day but the balance hadn't updated, so I wound up over-drafting an account. Basically, any transaction you make in the afternoon, you might not see it register until mid-day two days later.

Also electronic payments to my mortgage took days to register even though they held both accounts.

Literally every other bank posts transactions within the bank immediately, or at a minimum shows a notation that a transaction is pending for things like billpay.

Also, it takes a day before they'll post large deposits to your accounts.

A Kafkaesque nightmare.

Online banking system seems intentionally designed to reduce user to tears of frustration.

I couldn't have asked for a worse bank!

First the face to face service at the bank is horrible. I experienced nothing but disrespect from every teller and "customer service" rep. I loathed going to the bank to deposit weekly checks. The worst thing I have experienced with the bank has been not my loss but my mothers. She went to the branch in Horn Lake MS to deposit $200 into my account. A few days before the deposit my account was closed. I was not informed. The account was closed after a service charge was taken out, leaving my account .59 negative. The bank let my mother deposit $200 into a closed account. Then proceeded to tell her I could withdraw the money the same day. After trying to withdraw this money three septate times I called the bank's 1888 #. I did not get any real answer about where the money went. The customer service rep had no idea there was a deposit ever made. Not a whole two hours later my mother went to the bank that she deposited the money with her deposit slip and they also had no idea where the money went and did nothing to resolve the problem. I have received no help from this bank in getting the money back to her. Oh also online banking is as primitive as going into the bank. It takes just as long.
