Horrible service, unprofessional, MAJOR hassles.

I recently opened an account with Ally bank and closed it less than 2 weeks later. I called them because i noticed my birthdate in my account profile was inputted wrong and needed to be corrected. I had to answer about 4 security questions and provide her with all the necessary account info needed (no big deal). But at the end she says i need to fax them a copy of my drivers license even though i gave them all my info that was needed......? They said they will call my cell 2 business days after they recieve the faxed copy...that's 5 days from now!!? Not only that, but the service rep was giggling on the other end! I found this bank to be unprofessional. If changing something so simple is such a pain, can you imagine what would happen of you had a real issue?? Do not open an account with these people. And if you have one aleeady i suggest you pull out. Open an account with a bank that has a physical branch you can deal with.

Miserable my money was stolen.

My little two accounts at Ally Bank went bananas last week. I (as usual) was getting close on my balance. Ally took a large check, bounced it, charged me 30.00 plus another 15.00, just for kicks I guess. They ignored the deposit made 6 hours after the check was presented, I guess technically I was overdrawn for 6 or so hours. One think about me is I don't keep a lot of money in banks, just enough to cover my payable balance Ally Bank is one good reason to be cautious. Right now I am again looking for the banking version of Miss Wonderful.

No longer good for expats, and quirky annoyances

When we first opened an Ally account it was rated very highly for US citizens living abroad. It was free to use ATMs overseas, but that was dropped. Now they no longer do international money transfers. We are switching banks. One annoyance was that because my husband and I use both the same email address and the same bank account, one of us could not register our email address without causing major problems. heir PopMoney does not work either, without a separate email address. On the plus side the 24 hour customer service is good.

Awful And Rude

What an awful and rude experience. Dealing with these people is really just a hassle but on top of that, they are super rude. Unprofessional and honestly, they are all lucky to have jobs. I hope this place closes so the employees here can go back to telemarketing and flipping burgers, because that is where they belong

Ridiculously bad service

Despite the good reviews elsewhere on the internet, setting up a simple account with them is ridiculous. You normally walk into a bank, show ID and some money, and open an account. With them, you fill out a web form, call them, wait on hold, they tell you they have to review things, they don't know how long it will take, then you get an approval email a few days later telling you a "welcome package" is coming, only to get another email telling you to call them, then they put you on hold again... They are trying hard not to have anyone open an account!

Attractive rates, poor service

I have a couple of savings accounts with Ally. The interest rates are attractive. However, the customer service on the phone is terrible. In the last 24 hours, I have been placed on a series of holds "while we review your account. One hold lasted 36 minutes and one hold lasted 41 minutes. The agent handling the calls in both cases failed to answer a simple question. "How do I get my money from a mature account"? I do not blame the agents as I am sure my question exceeded the limits of their training. I do think that Ally has real customer service issues. You should be aware and expect such if you choose to bank with Ally bank. I will not...

Looking for an online bank and Ally's "contact us" page scared me away

I was looking for an online bank and since Ally seemed to have the best ratings, wanted to ask a question via email. When you go to their Email page, the form is screwed up and none of the drop downs work. The form has question marks and what looks like data names rather than English.

I thought it might be my MAC so tried it on a PC running Windows 7 with same results.

How scary is that - an online bank where you cannot contact them via email!

No access

Their process to set up a new acct does not include a means to access the acct--as do others. I presumed, therefore, that they would create a temporary access code and give it to me. Nope. They insisted on my ringing them, which of course, involves a battery of time consuming ID checks. The clerk could not understand me, ('What? What?') so attempting to set up an access code was impossible. Tried e-mail, physical mail. 'Sorry, please go to hell.'

Apparently, when it comes to setting up an acct and funding it, no problem. But when it comes to actually gaining access to your new acct, 'Uh, duh, what? Why do you want access? Your money is doing fine. Trust us.' An online bank with no online access?

Poor online banking service

Had to cancel my accounts with Ally. Was expecting that an online only bank would have state of the art online banking experience. Far from it! First, my wife and I were forced to use two separate login IDs (for "security"). Ebills were setup using her user ID, and therefore customer support would not discuss anything related to Ebills with me, unless my wife was present as well. Ridiculous! I could write checks for the entire account worth and close the account without her, but they wouldn't provide customer service over the phone with my credentials only. Also, the online experience is simply sub-par. One of my ebills was missing the "pay now" button. Took them about four months to fix that. Also, when Ebills arrive, you cannot access a pdf of the actual bill. You have to log in the to the biller account separately to download a pdf (if you desire). With my current bank (traditional bank with far more advanced web site), a pdf is right there for the downloading. Another problem with online only banks is that occasionally, if you write a check, someone without a local bank will want to cash the check immediately a local branch. They can't do that with Ally. Bottom line - avoid this. The interest rate is higher than a traditional bank, but is still very low and not worth it.

Solid Online bank

Only writing this review because I couldn't believe all the bad reviews I saw on this site. I have had Ally for about a year now because I moved out to Hawaii and the local banks are all crap (no 'mainland banks' like wells fargo out here either). After some bad experiences with the locals I decided to just go the online route, ally was the best known so went with them. So far Ally has been the best bank I have ever had and I have never had a single issue with them.

They pay 100% of ATM fees everywhere exactly as advertised; give you free money transfers to any person at any bank, free checks etc. I even overdrafted my checking account once by accident and they waved all fees without me even asking. Also contrary to many reviews on here their customer service have been great for me. They have 24/7 phone availability, and I have never been on hold for more than 5 mins. People on the phone seem reasonably competent and never have done me wrong. Overall, a great bank if you know how to use a computer or pick up a phone.

Also, any review talking about car loans on here is not talking about the same Ally bank that offers checking/savings accounts; they are separate entities.

Horrendous bill paying service

My two properties are now in delinquency including penalties and interest due to Ally Bank's horrible bill paying service. They never sent the checks out for either of my properties semiannual taxes yet showed them in the system as having been sent. Their customer service department then refuses to make good on their obvious delinquency. One error....maybe. Two errors on the same day yet still claiming no responsibility? No way.

Stay away from this bank!!! The high interest rates they pay simply are not worth it.
