I have had absolutely no problems with Bank of the Sierra. Even though I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, my mailed deposits (to Porterville, CA) are handled promptly, accurately. I have never had to pay any service fees; they have even refunded ATM fees for non-associated ATMs.
I have had difficulties with a large bank (whose initials begin with Ch---); I advice anyone to bank with smaller American-owned banks and credit unions!!! [by the way, even some smaller "local" banks may have foreign ownership].

“Absolute Idots With No Clue!!!!”
I opened my business account just 1 week ago. I have had a business account with bofa since 2008. I have a property management company that is licensed with the feds and the state of cali. After the clovis branch checking me out thru the state and check system, it was ok to open the account. I gave them my ein number, id, operating agreements, etc. I was given temp checks until my check order came in. I deposited 2 checks and tried to deposit a third one thru their atm system (which sucks) then waiting for the check to clear being deposited into the new account. Only to find out that the check i gave them was sent back due to being a counter check from wf bank. I was told that they returned it due to my info not being on the check (which is a lie). However, all my info was on the check. I found all this out by calling asking about the check i deposited. I shared with erica that i wrote checks against my new account and why did they send it back and not even try to process the check. I could see if the check bounced but they didn't even try to process it. I went to wf bank and they told me their is nothing wrong on their end. I tried to check my balance at the hanford atm but the atm took my card. Then i called the next day to ask why? Then i was told that my account was closed due to fraud. I went to the bank to find out why my account was closed. They told me that they suspected fraud due to the fact that i stated "suite" on my address instead of telling them it was a ups box #. I asked dennis the manager, don't you think a phone call should have been made to me letting me know what was going on instead of them sending a letter and a check for the remaining balance of my account. They couldn't answer my questions i had for them. This bank sucks. A good thing i still had 1 check to clear bofa before i was going to close the acct. They didn't even care that i had checks writen against the new acct. Piss poor banking experience!!!!

“Bank of Sierra is OK by me!”
I opened this account a couple years ago when they accepted out-of-state applications and were paying over 4%. Even with the rate cut in half, it's still much better than most. As my primary account, I use it mostly online as intended so never had any issues with bank staff or customer service. Thier website does seem pretty dated, but not unlike several other community banks (M&T Bank and Provident NJ come to mind).
At first I thought the choice of ATM locations would be a problem but their Allpoint ATM network is in most (if not all) the Hess stations, Target stores, and 7-Elevens. Makes it much easier for me to find a FREE ATM than with any other bank. I can get reimbursed if I go outside the network, but why make Bank Sierra contribute to another bank's profit. If I need to transfer to an outside account, I use my other bank's website; Bank of Sierra doesn't charge me (the others would if the transfer was going the other way).
A couple times I thought of switching to a bank closer to home (the 3hr time zone difference is a bit annoying) with similar rules and/or better rates, but one thing makes me forget all that - this account works for me!
Good Job Bank of Sierra.

“Horrible”
This is the crappest Bank I have ever dealt with . The so called board of directors are assholes .They have used businesses and farmers money to build their business and then they turn their backs on the very people that helped them start their bank .I ESPECIALLY DISLIKE THE PORTERVILLE BRANCH CREDIT MANAGER . HE IS SLOB AND A SNEAKY LITTLE PRICK . HE AND THE BANKS LAWYERS WILL DO WHAT EVER IT TAKES TO RUIN YOUR BUSINESS IF YOU DEFAULT ON YOUR LOAN . This bank is slowly going down hill and I hope it fails ! I belive they are becomming like Bank of America, crooks ! So called local bank is not what it used to be . It is not only me who feels this way , just ask any person in Porterville they will tell you the same thing . I hope they loose their ass !

“slowly deteriorating ...”
When I opened the account I couldn't believe it - we were receiving over 4% interest from their Rewards Checking. In the past two years, the rate had been reduced twice. But the rate we are receiving is still one of the highest I can find.
I agree with previous review that the web site is not very good. It has the look and feel from 10 years ago. I don't transfer funds between institutions so the fact that this has been 'permanently disabled' doesn't bother me.
Their choice to use 'MasterCard' as their Debit card causes me grief. There is one chain around me that does not accept MasterCard but does accept debit.
I'd put up with all of this but the "straw the broke the camel's back" was the Bank's decision to no longer allow their customers the ability to use their Debit cards at gas stations as a credit card. They did this with NO notice. And this designation as 'gas station' covers convenience stores that sells gas and travel plazas where all the businesses (food, gas, etc) are owned by the same company - as many are. When I called to inquire about this I was told that this was due to the high volume of fraud they were experiencing and the Bank had to act quickly. This policy has been in effect for over a month and the Bank has still not notified their their customers and their staff claims that there are no immediate plans to repeal this policy.\
I like the most things about the Bank and don't want to leave - but having a 18 year old punk at a travel plaza hand you your card back after trying to purchase an over priced fast food meal and say "I need a different card, there ain't no money on this one." when you know there are thousands of dollars in your account is HUMILIATING.

“Horrible experience with Bank's customer service. ”
Josh must be an employee there and trying to brown nose somebody.
My attempts to close an account there have been nothing but frustrating. They have no method of closing all accounts at once and then blame the customer for not completing a step or overlooking something.
There customer service reps are sarcastic and rude and blame you for not reading fine print in unclear disclosure statements. For this they charge you fees that go unnoticed until you try to recover them .. good luck with that.
I would stick with a more reputable and professional bank instead of wasting your time and money with this bank.

“Terrible !! They call themselves A Community Bank ! Yeah Right”
Ok, yes I used their overdraft and was thankful in times of a tight economy. I asked them to move my deposit to another account and was told yes and yes that I can make payments on the overdraft but I had to wait 20 days but not 40 because they would close it . So got my letter on the 29th day to call for payments and a call at 4:55 pm to tell me they took all the money out of my account and posted to my overdraft with no notice .. We have checks written to pay bills on that other account and was told by Armie that it was too bad .. No notice stating "hey pay this now " no nothing. They said it was an employee error that the deposit was moved . But why is that my fault as a consumer .. I had every intention on paying my negative bal using the program they offered to me and they turned around and screwed me .. Waiting on a call back from VP Mona Karr and you guessed it no call . Horrible bank and service

“Best Bank I ever had”
I opened an account here several months ago. It is an out of state bank for me. I find the website easy to use (I am a senior) and secure.
Cutomer Service is corteous, friendy, and accurate, I contacted them several times by phone in a panic re errors shich turned out to be mine. Customer service take a great deal of time to explain and deal with phone issues. I have also contacted them by email and got a reply within a few hours. Their communication by mail is written in easy to read and understand termnology.
Above all their rate cannot be beaten. I get better service from this bank than any I have ever had. I have accounts in a number of other banks but this is my favorite bank.
