“Horrid Customer Service!”
I moved to a state where Commerce Bank doesn't exist and was forced to close my account. After 6 months my account is still open and I have been sent to collections and my credit score compromised over a $35 mistake that was theirs to begin with! Because of poor communication and lack of followthrough on the part of both their customer service and collections department, I still have no resolution! Allison, the last rep I spoke with from collections told me she would call back with a resolution and never did! This will effect me for years to come and I am so frustrated because I don't know what else to do! What a nightmare!

“I have one of their direct check pay cards because paper checks aren't an option at my job.”
Neither I nor anyone I work with has had a single positive experience with this bank. There's no ATM's or branches within 200 miles of where I live, so theres no way to get my paycheck without paying a fee. They charge 50 cents every time you call customer service. I've called 3 times now about not being able to log on to their online site to check my balance and recent transactions, and no one there has been of any help, still charge the 50 cents though. When I first got my card it took me 30 minutes and a few calls to customer service just to set up a pin. Their customer service takes 1 minute and 52 seconds of recorded menu's to even get to the option to talk to a person. Their paycard is just shit. big pile of shit.

“Great Bank!”
I love banking at Commerce and I have been doing so since 2008. I have read the other comments out there and although I do agree that the people who work the phones need a few lessons in customer service, I don't agree with half of the reviews on here. You have to understand a few things about banking before you can post something negative about a bank policies. For one thing, banks don't make money off your deposits, they make money off of loan interest and service fees. So when you threaten to move your account somewhere else, which is something I'm sure they hear all the time from people who just want something for nothing it doesn't threaten the bank's profitability. Also, Commerce Bank is an extremely conservative lender. That is why when the economy fell to pieces, Commerce was able to stand strong. They did not take any tarp funds and they actually gave money to local banks so that they did not go under. This is all public news you can look up btw. So even though you have been a customer forever, if you credit score is jacked up, Commerce will not lend to you at that particular time. They do have products that can help you improve your credit so maybe you should look into that. Another thing, when a certain president changed all of the banking regulations that allowed us all free checking.....that caused the banks to have to make up there revenue in different ways. Did you know that it actually costs the bank money to manage a completely free account? Who did you think pays for your debit card, checks and online banking when you have a completely free account? The bank does!!! And since when was a bank a free service gauranteed to citizens? Banks provide a service and people have no problem paying to get their hair cut or have someone plan a wedding for them but they don't feel they need to pay for their banking services? Besides, all commerce accounts have a way to be free, you just have to meet some very simple requirements.

“Very bad”
This Bank does not care about customers, all they care how to answer and give no solution, they don't care if you close account or not, they just don't want to deal with you on the phone its easier for them to say: this is bank policy and hang the phone, lazy people who just work for the salary not for customer service.

“Fee for not supplying an email address???”
Commerce Bank will soon have a new fee for its long-time customers.
You see Commerce bank used to offer free paper statements to account holders. However the teller at my local branch just notified me that in 2013 the paper statements will go away. If account holders want to receive paper statements there will be a $2/mo charge. That is not a major issue it helps the environment, personally I want e-statements because I just file the paper ones away. I also understand the additional charge that is not an issue.
So what is the problem?
Account holders must change to e-statements online and this is where it gets tricky. A change cannot be done without linking your bank account to an email address. I don't know about you but my email has been hacked before, been the target of spear fishing attacks, has been inundated with spam, and has been on the receiving end of viruses. Because of these security issues I abandon e-mail accounts every year. However there is no way to setup e-statements without an email address. (To clarify here the email account is only used to notify account holders that an e-statement is available on Commerce Bank's website. The statement is not emailed to account holders).
So what does this mean?
Unless the bank changes its policy, in 2013 Commerce Bank will start charging a $2/mo fee to account holders who do not link an email account to their bank account.
So I am asking the public here...
In the age of online security threats, does this policy actually make sense to anyone?

“Loan reject ”
I've had a checking account with Commerce Bank for over 5 years. I recently applied for a $1500 loan and didnt waste in anytime calling me saying my loan had been denied.
Its amazing how the banks got bailed out during the financial crisis, WITH OUR MONEY, but an average guy like myself who has a fair credit score cant qualify for a personal loan. MY ADVISE, DON'T USE COMMERCE IF YOU GOT A CREDIT SCORE UNDER 700.

“Worst Customer Service Team In The World...!!!”
I have being trying to receive a reference letter of my personal account since july 1st and so far they haven't done it yet... They direct re-direct and re-direct me over and over again through telephones, emails, etc to get it done and their are so incompetent and bureaucratic that it seems that you are doing them a favor to have your money there... As soon as i receive that letter i would close that account and move to a bank that cares about the customer... Terrible really dont open a account there..!!!

“Really gone downhill”
Within one month Commerce bank has "lost" our deposit throwing our account into a negative status. If I didn't check my account daily I wouldn't have known until I tried to use my debit. Both times they sent back a check due to insufficient funds and charged us $35.00. They fixed the issue both times but it's something that shouldn't happen once, let alone twice. We were told there was a glitch and their system didn't read the last digits of our account. However, our money was there when we went to bed and less than eight hours later it was gone. I'm tired of dealing with it and worrying that it's going to happen a third time. We're switching banks and it's a shame since I've been with Commerce over 10 years. I will not recommend them to anyone and if I know anyone who banks with them I will try my hardest to get them to switch banks. They have some of the highest rates out there and it's near to impossible to find a phone number to an actual branch. The main customer service line offers no help for errors made at a branch. As you can see, I'm a very unhappy customer!

“Had Enough!!!”
I have been with this bank since the early 1990's. I have had positive experiences from my local branches (South STL MO) and negative experiences with Commerce Bank. The local tellers are wonderful but Commerce removed the local branches phone numbers from their website so you pretty much have to deal with the main customer service line which is of poor quality.
LESSONS LEARNED
1) If you close an account, get it in writing. You will have to close your account at least three times. It seems the bank does this on purpose in order to charge a fee for zeroing out the balance. I used to have multiple accounts; I closed two of them at different times and got charged a fee both times. I had the local account rep sign each time I closed the same account. It took 3 times to fully close both accounts (My mother and brother had the same experience).
2) Debate your over draft fee’s. I had a bill got out (via Billpay) that wasn’t going to be cashed for another week. My Available balance went negative even though the check was never cashed (actual balance was positive). Commerce charged me an overdraft protection fee. (I never signed up for overdraft protection and they did not have my permission to charge it). So I debated it and got it erased.
COMPLAINTS
Online Billpay was updated Jan 2012. The new version is very poorly executed. The Pending Payments section was reorganized so the payments coming due in the near term are at the top and payments further out in the future are on the bottom. (This is reversed from the way that almost all other banks have their Pending section setup). What it means is that you have to scroll up and down the screen in order to see what has been paid and what will soon to be paid. This single update has now caused me to start searching for another bank as it cannot be changed on the customers end nor on the customer service reps end. Turned what was once a great system into a frustrating experience. IT IS ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIC!!!
