“This bank is notorious for lying and purposefully misleading the customer! Stay away or record your conversations!”
I had a saving account with Sovereign for multiple years and had absolutely no problems. However, when it came time to start a student checking account is when the problems started arising. In my first sitting with Mrs. Beth Kohr of the Union Deposit, Harrisburg PA branch, I was lied to a total of at least 3 times.
-Mrs. Kohr stated that I would receive free checks: this was incorrect. I was charged for my checks, which in turn caused my account to overdraft.
-Mrs. Kohr stated that if an overdraft occurred, the money would be transfered for free from my savings: this was incorrect, as I was charged approximately $12 for the overdraft caused by the checks I received.
-Mrs. Kohr stated that it is free to withdraw money from any CVS ATM nationwide: this is incorrect, as the CVS ATMs within my area all charge me $3...surprisingly, $2 more than an ATM that Sovereign doesn't support.
After the initial shock of being lied to multiple times, I called the offices to complain. The person I talked with said I would receive a phone call that very same day after 5pm due to my work schedule. Two days later, I get a call at 10am from the branch. The lady stated that she was sorry I was "accidentally mislead" (notice how they refuse to say "lied to") and that they are very sorry.
I told her that I am most likely going to close my account out because I no longer trusted the bank. I asked that if I close my account if I would be exempt from an early termination fee due to the bank "accidentally misleading" me. The lady said there would be no problem.
Upon trying to close my account, the teller told me I would have to accept an early termination fee. I explained how I should be exempt due to the banks problems. The teller practically told me that it is not her fault and that she can not exempt me from the termination fee.
I encourage people to record all conversations when communicating with this bank. They are corrupt and will treat you like trash.

“Amazingly inept and untrained branch employees--Telephone reps sound tired. Ever called Wells Fargo? What a difference”
The Whitehall PA branch is only equipped to handle personal transactions. I have business loans with them (in good standing). When I had a question about a balance on the loan, no one in the bank could access that information for me. There have been other situations like that in different branches, as well.
So, my questions have to go to an 800 number with the bank where I deal with people who sound tired and have no customer service skills, except to call me "mam" when I start to get agitated.
I faxed a form they needed yesterday and this morning I was told they didn't receive it although I sent it to the attention of the rep I was dealing with.
I can't wait to pay off our loans so I don't have to deal with this bank again.

“Worst Bank I ever dealt with - STAY AWAY!!!!”
Have a mortgage with this bank and around last May 2012, the entire bank did a software upgrade. Well, it screwed up all the payments for thousands of customers and it's still broken. Month after month, they screw up the mortgage payments, sometimes they take out more, sometimes they deduct less, sometimes they take nothing at all. I have over 30 + logged calls and nothing has changed. Simple math and they still can't get it right. Now we have to go back and figure interest and what they owe me on months of payments that they incorrectly
applied. It's like pulling teeth getting them to make the corrections. I can guarantee you if I owed the bank money on a missed payment or error on my part, they would be on it with interest, fees, deductions etc... This is not a good bank to do business with. If I could transfer my mortgage and run, I would. Having to keep going back and spend an hour on the phone each time to correct simple math errors on the banks end for over a year is completely unacceptable!!

“Terrible bank.”
Did you ever hear of a bank refusing to return your own money? It's Sovereign! They refused to issue a check the day our CD matured. They said the system is programmed to make you wait one business day after the date of maturity!! No other bank does that and it's probably a violation of banking rules. I'll take my money elsewhere. Howard Beach N.Y. has at least three other more hospitable banks. Parenthetically, this was also the branch that couldn't safeguard its deposit boxes from thieves.

“Worst Customer Service EVER!”
In Oct 2012 I went into the Sovereign Bank in Wareham, MA for 3 simple things: 1) take someone off of my account 2) change the mailing address 3) order a new ATM card.
As of March 21st, they have only 1 out of my 3 requests completed after dealing with 3 people, going there in person, and 5 phone calls.
I found out that the previous ATM card I had ordered had been sent to another address not even associated with my account.
To make matters worse, Danielle, the Customer Service Manager, faxed my personal info, DOB and SS# to my work fax machine when I wasn't even at work!
So, now not only is my account compromised with unauthorized people being able to access my account, my own personal information is at risk for identity theft!
Take your money elsewhere where it will be safe and their employees have common sense to not fax your personal information!

“Unprofessional Experience~Rating should be less than 1”
In the beginning of November 2012, I was approved for a "Small Business Start-Up Loan" from Sovereign Bank. My Small Business Specialist, Mr. Michael Ceroli from the Havertown, PA branch informed me that the loan was good for ninety days. During this time, Mike Ceroli made many mistakes on handling my loan contract. During the month of January 2013, Mr. Ceroli contacted me to rewrite my loan contract because he did not prepare the loan contract properly. At this time, the cooperate officer had to step in to fix the loan contract. Keith Kiendle, Relationship Assistant III and Mark Hiatt, CEVF Lead Specialist rewrote the loan and did not inform me about the new loan contract's expiration date. The loan expired on February 13, 2013, however I had already paid for the first and last monthâ??s least payments and the additional fees required to receive the $100,000 loan. I also took the initial steps in securing the loan, by paying 20% of my vendors purchase orders out of my own pocket. Two weeks before opening my business, Sovereign Bank decided to back out of the loan contract, as stated by Keith Kiendle and Michael Ceroli. Keith Kiendle and Michael Ceroli explained that because I withdrew my money from my business cd account I had broken a verbal agreement therefore, I would be unable to receive the loan. They both told me that I had to secure $100,000 in my Sovereign bank account to requalify for a $100,000 business loan that I had already been approved for. I told them that if I had that kind of money I would not need a loan. Now that Sovereign Bank has backed out of the loan agreement I would like to collect all of my loan payments and fees. Mike Ceroli and Keith Keindle assured me that I would receive all of my money, but my money has not be been returned to me and I have called Keith Kiendle and Michael Ceroli to collect my refunded and they havenâ??t responded back to me. I also called the Havertown bank manager, but I did not get any response. At this point I just want my money back.
