“Bad Experience”
I tried to open a secondary checking account with BAM last year, having had only Citibank accounts for years. The branch itself, the customer service and the website all were extremely disappointing. The amount in my account was incorrectly reflected and I was charged numerous service fees which did not apply to my situation. After 1 month I canceled my account and opened additional Citibank accounts which are now linked.
“Reliable”
I've been using Citibank for 10+ years now and have had minimal problems. Twice my account has been compromised due to using freestanding ATM's in NYC, and both times Citibank quickly canceled my cards and reimbursed the money into my account. Online account access is great and very user friendly, I no longer use stamps - make all of my transactions online. I also have a Citibank savings account and transfers and payments between my accounts have always been seamless. I highly recommend Citibank for personal banking.
“feels secure”
Since HSBC has no physical building anywhere near my house, it felt odd at first putting money in here. However, now that I'm more comfortable with it, I am able to appreciate how easy it is to transfer money on-line to and from this account. The interest is always better than the interest offered at the savings account offered at my bank.
“Kind service, low interest”
The interest with Chase savings is not high. However, the customer service is great, the web site easy to use, and it is conveniently linked to my checking. I keep money here after it is deposited from a check until I can transfer it to an online site with higher interest.
“convenience trumps all”
ATMs are everywhere, check card works everywhere, everything just works.
If you can, keep enough in checking and savings to avoid monthly fees.
Interest on savings is low - so put most of your savings elsewhere.
Customer Service is just like it is at all other mega-companies, but I've been with them since they took over Fleet Bank and I've not had any problems that weren't easily resolved.
“Awful!”
Granted, they do have ATM's everywhere and it is convenient in the sense that you will most likely find a Bank of America no matter where you are.
BUT
This is hand's down the worst bank I have ever come across on many different levels. The interest rates on savings accounts are awful. More importantly their customer service is an absolute joke. For starters, I posted payment for my credit card over the phone a week in advance. The charge never went through though, and I was charged a late fee (small incident yes but the customer service folks weren't very nice about it.) Second, when attempting to inform BOA I was leaving for Europe, I was on hold for 30 minutes, directed to someone who directed me to someone else, who then put me back to square one where I had to reselect all my options.
Personally, if you are looking to save money, open a CD, or start an IRA ING is probably the way to go. BOA options in terms of CD's are are pretty limited. I've had a savings account for years with BOA and haven't accumulated much. IGN is definitely the way to go.
So if I hate BOA so much why haven't I switched? The honest answer is that I'm terribly lazy and don't have the drive necessary to do an all out banking search. But cmon the "keep the change" program is god awful. Just look at the rates here at the top of this page, they speak for themselves....
And hey--did anyone read that news article recently about the 80 year old woman who inexplicably had the APR on her credit card raised to 20%+?? Good job BOA! You guys are awesome! syke! you are a plague on humanity....I can't wait to be rid of you
P.S. BOA stock fell 7.3% last week....good times!
