“Get everything in writing, and prepared for a long wait for service”
BBVA Compass has many problems that were compounded with the recent merger with Guaranty Banks here in Texas. Merge 2 busy locations into the smaller building, have 1/2 or less of the tellers from both and expect them to learn both systems while serving the customers. 2 busy locations now have typically 5 total available tellers inside and drivethrough.. but we are expected to be patient while they open and close tellers at will during the busiest periods of time. On top of that try find the hiding manager or or account assistants. I was offered free checks and deposit tickets only to have to prove it each time after the origional order. Add to this service charges for cash deposits over $1000.00 per day. No one knows much about anything including the manager.. Online banking is tedious and out of date requiring multiple ckicks to do anything and it defaults to todays date when on daily information is not avalable until the next day. They keep promising updated sofeware both for the customer and employees but both systems are terribly slow.. Good luck finding any local district or corporate managers that care or will willingly correct errors on their part without a hassle.
“A huge $4000.00 Mistake ”
I've been with Compass bank for a little over two years now and it has been just one mistake after another.
First mistake: I went to the branch to make a CASH DEPOSIT in the amount of $300.00 to make sure that I had enough in my acct to cover some checks I had written. Even though it was a CASH DEPOSIT funds dont actually post to the acct or shown available online until the next business day. So I waited the next buisness day to verify that the funds have posted to my acct. The $300.00 still wasn't showing as available so I went to the branch to inquire on why the funds haven't posted. Come to find out the teller had posted my deposit to a acct that didn't even exist (it's a good thing I kept the reciept) and was told that they would have to investigate on where the funds was posted inorder to have the cash deposited to my acct. The investigation only took two days but in the meanwhile the checks that I've wirtten had cleared my acct. Several NSF Fees had posted to my acct and it took forever to have those NSF fees refunded.
Second mistake: I went to the branch to make another cash deposit in the amount of $80.00 to be posted to my savings acct. The $80.00 posted to my acct with out a problem but when I checked my acct the next day it showed that my savings acct was negitive over $3000.00!!! Apon viewing my acct. I noticed that a withdrawl in the anount of $4000.00 was made from my savings acct from a person that I didn't even know or had any affiliation with. The bank had made a mistake and withdrew the funds from the wrong acct which happened to be my savings acct.!! "How could this happen"? You would think that their system would notify the teller that the funds was being withdrawn from the wrong acct and that I didn't even have 4000.00 in my acct to cover the withdrawl!!!. To make a long story short it took several days of me going back and forth to the branch to get it corrected and having to dispute multiple NSF fees that were posted due to the $4000.00 withdrawl. I finally had to withdrawl all
“Compass Bank will rip you off.”
I'm yet another person who had free checking and savings accounts with Compass Bank. Even though I have signed paperwork stating these were no fee accounts, Compass Bank changed the accounts' status without notification and drained the checking account of every dime and made a good dent in the savings account. They refused reveiw the charges and also refused to provide me with copies of the paperwork I had to sign to close the accounts.
From my experience as well as reading other postings this is commonplace at Compass Bank.
Look elsewhere for your banking needs if you want to hang onto your money.
“They are frauds”
Last year I had a small balance of approximately $58. I was en route from one state to another and did not have an online account. I did, however, have a cell phone connected to the account. During this time, someone fraudulently charged some magazines to my account and it overdrew my account by about $3.00. By the time I discovered it, Compass had charged over $168 in overdraft fees to my account. I went to one of their branch offices and filled out dispute forms, etc. The person there told me that all the charges would be refunded but that I needed to pay them $168 right then. I didn't have $168 and did not understand why I should have to pay for something I didn't owe. They said it would take six weeks and then it would all be credited. They told me to ck back in a week and they would give me an update from the fraud department. They would never speak with me again. I went back there and they were always too busy to see me. They continued to charge overdraft charges. Then I saw that they had reversed the fraudulent charges for $58. In the meantime, my IRS and state refunds were direct deposited totaling over $500. They took all that and then turned my account over to a collector who said I still owed over $170. It was turned into the credit bureau and trashed my credit. Compass still has all my money and I can't afford to hire an attorney.
“Compass bank the slumlord of banking”
All of us can't be wrong:
http://www.complaintsboard.com/?search=compass+bank&everything=Everything
My exhusband gave me a check to deposit from his new account he opened with Chase bank
because I borrowed some money from him. He later come back and told me that Chase closed
his account due to information they found about him.
I immediately contacted my bank (Compass) to ask how this would affect me and I was told
that the $333.00 would be reversed and I would pay a $6 fee.
The next day I was checking for my automatic deposit of my paycheck and to see if my
father's $1,200 wire had posted to my account only to find that my account had been frozen.
I called Compass customer service as was told that my account was frozen but not closed
because back in December of 2009 my ex-husband tried to cash a check for $730.00 and the
signature did not match.
I went to the branch and explained that I gave him the check because I wrote it from my
hospital bed. The story then changed and I was told that my account is frozen because I
knowingly deposited a check into my account on a closed account.
Corporate security not only froze my account for closure but they are holding all my money
until January 20, 2010 so I am told. This happened on January 4, 2010.
I have been everyone just to get this story out so that people can make up their minds is
this the type of bank they want to keep their money in.
Is this not how the holocaust or slavery started because anyone who can do anything just
turned their backs. Should your zip code determine if your story is important or not.
Isn't it time that the news really looked at what local news is all about. The people that
it serve not just when we are on fire, shot and arrested.
P.s. let me give kudos to Salco properties for not evicting me from my apartment and Qwest
who gave me until February 12, 2010 to get caught up and not turn off my phone or internet.

“Customer Service? Not in this lifetime.”
I dont even have an account with Compass bank; never have no one i know even has an account with them but still they call me 4 times a day and leave 4 voicemails calling from a restricted number about going into a branch to clear up my issues. I DONT HAVE ISSUES WITH THE BANK - i cant possibly have issues i have no connection to this bank other than the fact that they somehow got my number.
I have tried a total of 12 times to get ahold of their customer service dept to have them stop calling me. I have gotten a hold of them 1 time in all of the tried and they told me they would not stop calling me because they had no power over their automated system. LIES.
In the end the manager on duty when i actually got through told me i had to go to a branch to have them stop calling me. I dont even know where a branch is, i have never even seen a Compass bank. Just due to alllllll of this HORRIBLE customer service- without even having an account. i would say RUN from this bank take your money and RUN!
I have Chase bank and i COMPLETELY satisfied with it, the customer service, and all the locations available to me - in case any one reading this is looking for a bank.
“absolute con artists and thieves... STAY AWAY!!!”
Fees fees fees fees, oh... did i mention.. FEEEEES>
deceptive practices, holding deposits and debit transactions in order to post them in such a way to guarantee NSF funds. Free banking is NEVER FREE. always always always some fee... whether 3.00 on up for such nonsense.
Online banking is a joke, you cant add other banks to permit funds transfers, awkward navigation and clumsy user interface. A real pain to use and I use online banking extensively with other institutions.
Took over a local bank that I had been with for years and immediately got rid of 7-7 banking, dropped numbers of tellers, and public hours to actually SEE a teller. Instituted outrageous fees for everything under the sun.
No branches to do business with
When closing the account they would not mail remainder of account, you had to write THEM a letter with tons of information in order to get a check mailed to you... no transfers from the bank to another bank once again.
Telephone system is MADDENING,, numerous requests for your acct number, pin, name etc only to have to REPEAT ONCE again when you finally reach a human being.
I WILL STAY WITH BANK OF AMERICA WHO AT LEAST PRETENDS THAT ITS YOUR MONEY AND THEIR SERVICE IS IMPECCABLE.
“Compass Bank is out for blood, not for happy clients”
I have never in my life been talked down to in such a demeaning fashion. First, I was told that since I missed my credit card payment of under $100 by three days they inflated my credit card rate up from 5.9% to just under 30%! Over the next 3 years I have continued to have tough times economically. Every other credit card I have ever had has worked with me to keep my rates low and to keep me a happy client. For instance, Discover, Wa Mu (now Chase) great cards, great service. Neither one of them threatened to "ruin my credit so badly that no other institution would touch me within 7 years." Not to mention that they have my number plugged into the same damn automated system that was mentioned in an earlier review and have called me one day over 20 times. I strongly suggest not ever starting anything with this bank. They are unprofessional, mean, and refuse to work with their clients. So far in 3 years I have paid the bloodsuckers $11,000 on a $5,000 limit and had my account closed after I was in good standing with them for over 2 years. This bank is a joke. I hope they go bankrupt and are the next bank to go under just so all of their bloddsucking employees can feel the wrath, pain, anger, and harrassment that they have caused myself, my family, and my work place.
“I've had issues”
I had a build to order checking account with compass. I added free "overdraft" protection on the account. It is not really what they make you out to believe it is. You have to call up there within 7 days to use it or they charge you 7 dollars a day for 30 days. They do not have it automated like the rest of the world. I have asked them to close the account ASAP after finding this out but they would not. They have since had a machine calling the number I gave to them when opening the account saying it is a courtesy call when talking to a human which is a lie. I filed a report with the bbb.org stating there is nothing in the non-disclosure stating that I would like "courtesy" calls. Julio at 480-403-7892 for Compass said he would take the number out of the machine. The machine quit calling after 48 hours after he put in a request but now the machine is calling again after 7 business days which the bbb complaint is not update-able. Seems like these guys at compass have had to deal with the bbb.org before to not start calling again until after 7 business days. You also can not contact the local branch by calling them on the phone. This is a shady bank and stay far far away. I have never had problems with banks until I opened until I opened a Compass account.
“Online banking is a joke.”
If all you need is a place to put money so you can write checks, all for free, this might be the bank for you.
When starting a business we signed up with Compass first because of the "free checks for life" kind of offers. We asked about Quickbooks integration and were told they offer that and everything seemed good. So we signed up and away we went.
We got home to discover they don't offer online features for business checking accounts (not new ones anyway). We were e-mailed a passcode to login online, and their web interface is an absolute joke. Confusing, ugly, unmanageable... did I mention ugly?
Not only that, but to login to our business checking required 3 clicks on their web page just to get to the login screen, where you have to remember your "company id" (which is a random number assigned to you) and your login id... which will then take you to your image verification and password screen. Everytime I wanted to login to my account I had to go look-up my "company id" because it was impossible to memorize. Ridiculous.
We couldn't even hook our account up with mint.com. And it was only because of the particular type of account they signed us up with.
