The Scams

I had an overdraft on my account and instead of just charging the overdraft of $30...fifth third took all of the lower amounts and charged them. The day before the $30 automatic w/drawl I had made several purchases between $2-$10 because they over drafted those charges instead of the $30 I got charged over $200 in overdraft charges instead of the $25 I should've been charged. I hope they're enjoying my money cause that's the last they'll ever get of it.

Online Banking Fraud

Beware of unscrupulous online business practices.

Please be aware that if you choose to bank online with 5/3rd, money for checks paid will come out of your account on the day the checks are written, not on the day the payee cashes the check. This, according to their online agreement takes a minimum of 5 business days. During that time the money is NOT yours NOR is it the payees.

If a payee disputes a payment you will be unable to pull up a copy of the check. And there is no way to âseeâ online if the check has been cashed. At this point a âdisputeâ must be filed with the online banking division. It will take at least 10 business days for a representative from online banking to contact you. At that time you will be told whether or not the check has been cashed. At no time will you receive a copy of the check, which was deposited. However, a copy will be sent to the payee! If the payee continues to dispute the payment you will have no paper trail to prove the check was cashed.

With this system money is taken from your account on the day the checks are written and you are given no documentation that the checks were ever actually cashed. Where exactly does the money go?

This is being reported to the Stateâs Attorneys office.

Wow! What a great bank!

Fifth Third is one bank that really cares. When I went in to open my accounts they were very friendly and knew what they were talking about. The online banking is also very user friendly, they even took the time to help me get signed up. All banks have fee's if you don't take it upon yourself to keep track of "your" spending! It's simple, don't spend money you dont have. My personal experience has been great! If I need help, I call and talk to my banker... I think people have got lazy and place blame everyone but themselves... Rock on Fifth Third :o)

Decent

I've had an account with this bank for many years. Their online banking is the best I've used so far, or maybe I'm just used to it. I use their online bill payment for just about everything. I have checks when that is needed (very rarely) and they have given me a mastercard with a $2500 limit (which I didn't apply for, they just asked me if I wanted it). The only annoyance I've had is great difficulty getting my debit cards sent to me. I have a PO Box which they will not deliver to, even if my mail is being forwarded to it. I know it's good security, but I couldn't even get them to send it to a local branch so I could pick it up in person. You do have to read over their fees and do your banking accordingly to avoid them, but it can be done. In all the years I've used them I've only paid a fee for a foreign (country) transaction on my debit card. That's a bit annoying, but it was less than $2 so ultimately not a big deal. For online bill payment this bank is really the best IMO. They don't charge monthly fees for using the bill pay, although they will charge if you go over 20 payments per month. I've never gone over it and I use it for everything from the light bill to my mortgage payment. They also have email alerts that will tell you when your credit card bill is due and the daily balance on your account. This is very useful for me, it saved me from being ripped off when my debit card number was stolen and used. I would highly recommend this bank for online checking account and bill payments. Not so much for savings though as their rates are pitiful.

TOO MANY BAD EXPERIENCES TO LIST

I HAVE BANKED WITH 5/3 FOR 9 YEARS AND I HAVE HAD A FEW ISSUES IN THE PAST. IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS I HAVE HAD HORRIBLE EXPERIENCES!!! FIRST, THEIR ATM MACHINE DIDN'T GIVE ME THE MONEY I WITHDREW. IT TOOK MY CARD SEVERAL MINUTES TO SPIT OUT OF THE MACHINE. I DROVE TO THE OTHER ATM AND TOOK MONEY AND THEN WENT INSIDE TO TELL THE TELLER WHAT HAD HAPPENED. SHE TOLD US THAT ATM MACHINE DOES THAT A LOT AND TO SEE IF THE MONEY POSTS TO MY ACCOUNT BECAUSE IT SHOULD CORRECT ITSELF OVERNIGHT. IT DIDNT CORRECT ITSELF SO I HAD TO GO IN A FILL OUT A DISPUTE. I SPOKE WITH THE SAME MANAGER AND SHE SAID IT WAS NO PROBLEM TO FILL OUT THE DISPUTE AND I WOULD GET MY MONEY BACK. 3 WEEKS LATER I GOT A DENIAL LETTER SAYING THEY WERE NOT RETURNING MY MONEY. 3 MONTHS LATER I HAVE AN UNAUTHORIZED CHARGE FOR 170.00 I DISPUTED IT AND THEY TELLER TOLD ME TO FILL OUT A DISPUTE IT WAS AN EASY PROCESS AND MY MONEY WOULD BE RETURENED. AGAIN IT TOOK ABOUT A MONTH BEFORE THEY SENT ME A LETTER STATAING THEY WOULD NOT REFUND MY MONEY BECAUSE I HAD NOTHING IN WRITING SAYING I DIDN'T AUTHORIZE THE CHARGE...MEANING I HAD NO WRITTEN PROOF (EVEN THOUGH I SENT A 1 PAGE LETTER STATING WHAT HAPPENED!!) AFTER THAT MY SISTER NEEDED PROOF OF INCOME THAT I HAD BEEN PAYING HER FOR CHILDCARE. SINCE MY PRINTER WAS OUT OF INK WE WENT TO 5/3 WHERE THEY PRINTED 3 SHEETS OF PAPER THAT TOOK ABOUT 2 MIN. THEY CHARGED ME 15.00 WITHOUT EVEN TELLING ME. THIS IS A HORRIBLE BANK. I CLOSED ALL MY ACCOUNTS WHICH I SHOULD HAVE DONE A LONG TIME AGO AFTER HEARING OTHER ISSUES CUSTOMERS HAD!!

Not the best option...

I have a vehicle financed through Fifth-Third. First, you cannot pay or manage your act online unless you establish a checking/saving act with them. Since there is no local branch of this bank in my city, I chose not to do so. They offer Bill payer 2000, which allows them to automatically deduct your payment. However, they charge you 30 cents per withdrawal.. I lost my job and asked about them deferring this months payment, they would not even work with me. Which makes no sense, b/c if they defer it, they make more money off me, b/c that extends my loan for one more month. There were no alternative options offered or anything. I am now working on paying down my loan and having my credit union refinance me. This bank is horrible. I will NEVER EVER seek services from them again and if anyone ever ask me about my experience, I will plead with them to use another financial institution!

Merchants beware!

Merchants beware! Don't let this bank process your charge cards! Recently we were contacted by an overseas customer for some products. Since we were hesitant due to possible fraud, we contacted 5/3 and went through the entire approval process. We went through Visa International, the issueing bank and the bank called the customer for approval! All three transactions were approved in full many times over! Then it appeared that it was a fraud and we provided non-disputable paper trails up to and including signed receipts for delivery. All through the process we were told that "...the money cannot be taken from you if you have our approvals..." Then without warning 5/3 took over $10,000 from our account! When we argued, 5/3 told us that no one had approved the sales even though we had six-digit approval codes! During one conversation with a 5/3 representative (Norma) she told us that all was OK and the money replaced in our account! We followed our account for a couple of days and then found that she had lied to us just to get rid of us! Merchants and customers beware! These people are totally dishonest liars and thieves! BEWARE!!

Stay away from mortage department

We had no issues for ten years with our checking and savings accounts, so we decided to refinance our mortage through Fifth Third. It has been a totally awful experience. The loan officer delayed the application, so the 60-day period for our rate expired. He refused to answer phone messages when we tried to ask about the delay. We finally got in touch with his boss. The two together then tried to introduce a point charge which was not listed in our original loan application that we signed. They also asked the appraisal company to appraise our house a SECOND time, in such a way that the extra point charge would now apply (without telling the appraisers the reason for the second appraisal)! Unbelievable. At this point we are incredibly frustrated, and it is likely we will lose our initial rate. We never knew that mortgage officers at mutliple levels could be such crooks! I didn't give a 0 only because our other accounts have had no problems.

Don't do it.

This bank is FULL of hidden fees and costs to their customers. Do yourself a favor, and find a local credit union, or at least a more fair and honest bank. You'll be sorry if you do business with Fifth Third!
