“Penalized for doing the right thing...”
I've been a M&T customer for about six years and in that time my opinion of them has dropped steadily. The latest customer service fiasco was when I realized that the US Postal Service had lost one of my checks. I attempted to use the Stop Payment form (which didn't work) in their highly touted online banking but had to resort to talking with one of their telephone representatives.
The representative was very nice and took all the information efficiently, but the one thing he didn't do was mention the penalty (they call it a fee) of $30 to place the stop payment (an electronic notification which probably took all of 30 seconds to enter). This fee is not mentioned anywhere in their online banking, wasn't mentioned by the telephone representative and was also missing from the confirmation letter sent a day later.
I called their telephone banking center back, after the local branch refused to help me (not the first time this has happened) and the representative I spoke with gave me a "one-time courtesy waiver" of the $30. She stated that the ONLY place the fees can be found is in my original contract (signed three YEARS ago for this account). I asked her, "So if I get penalized for doing the right thing and issuing the stop payment notice, what happens if I do nothing, the check gets stolen and misused, and then I report it?" She said that she didn't know. My guess is there's a hidden fee for that too!
“Aweful, aweful bank who woyuldn't know customer service if it bit them.”
After 10 years of happily being with my bank they were bought out by M &T. In one month they pushed things through three separate times before a direct deposit to charge outrageous fees this is immoral and fraudulent. They have no knowledge of customer service and will screw you and take your money at any chance they can. I will never bank with them again.
“College Checking Account”
M&T was the only bank that has branches both at home and where I go to school, so it was a default choice, but I am very satisfied with its college checking account. It has no fees or minimums, which helps a lot when you have irregular cash flow like most college students. I love that it reimburses ATM fees from other banks, and I have never had trouble using my debit card that is linked to the account. The one experience I had with customer service was quick and painless, and the website has recently been updated and is now more useful than before.
I don't know if I'd stay with it after college due to the low/nonexistant interest rates, but it is a fantastic college checking account with no hassle.
