As the first three months of the year come to an end, consumers with three popular credit cards — Chase Freedom, Citi Dividend Platinum Select and Discover More — may want to consider some home renovations and pay close attention to movie previews.

The card trio has become some of consumers’ favorite credit cards because they offer 5% cash back on certain categories, which change on a quarterly basis.

The cards also give out 1% cash back on all other purchases. Discover More requires $3,000 in annual spending before getting 1% cash back on all purchases (earns 0.50% cash back on first $3,000 spent).

The cash-back categories for the upcoming quarter are appropriate for the spring season, when Americans begin to spend more time outside their homes. Movie theaters appears to be the most popular category — the Discover More card will be doling out 5% cash back for movies for the entire year. Citi Dividend cardholders will earn a whopping amount of cash back if they plan to make improvements or decorate their homes in time for the warm weather.

Here are the 5% cash back categories for each of the three credit cards:

All three card issuers continue to require cardmembers to enroll in the 5% cash back programs. Sign-up for the next quarter has already opened up.

For Discover More and Citi Dividend cardmembers, the 5% cash back is earned on qualifying purchases starting with the date of enrollment. Chase Freedom cardholders have until June 14, 2012, to enroll and all qualifying purchases beginning on April 1, 2012 will receive the 5% cash back.

Cardmembers should note that there are limits to how much cash back they can earn on these categories. However, the Citi Dividend only limits card members to a total of $300 cash back for the calendar year.

Currently, there are $100 and $200 bonus cash back sign-up offers for the Chase Freedom and Citi Dividend Platinum Select cards.
