Weekly Unemployment Applications Fall to 5-Year Low

Updated on Thu Jan 24, 2013

Fewer Americans are applying for unemployment benefits last week — just 330,000, the lowest since January 2008. The numbers, hopefully, are sign that the jobs market is on a path to improvement.

Savers who’ve been frustrated at today’s low interest rates may be glad to see better unemployment statistics. The Federal Reserve said that interest rates will rise when the unemployment rate drops.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate is at 7.8 percent (we’re aiming for 6.5 percent).
