About the Bank

First Citizens Bank is a growing regional bank, with more than 500 branches in 18 states. Headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, First Citizens primarily serves customers in states along the East Coast but it also extends its reach to Arizona, California, Colorado and Texas.

The bank’s focus lies in three key areas: personal banking, business banking and wealth management.

Personal banking products and services include checking, savings, money market and CD accounts. First Citizens offers something unique in the Your Family First program.

Customers who open a Prestige or Premier checking account can enroll in the program at no charge to enjoy discounts and special benefits like a closing costs credit on a First Citizens Bank mortgage, an introductory credit for new Coverdell Savings Accounts and a rewards point bonus if you have a First Citizens Rewards Visa card.

The program also comes with a First Citizens Together card account. This is a deposit account with a linked debit card specifically designed for parents who want to help their children learn how to spend responsibly. This account doesn’t allow for overdrafts or charge an overdraft fee, nor does it have a monthly maintenance for Prestige or Premier checking customers.

Premier and Prestige checking are both interest-bearing accounts and they offer preferred rates on First Citizens Bank home equity lines of credit and CD accounts. With Premier checking, your first five non-First Citizens Bank ATM transactions are free each month.

Prestige checking offers unlimited use of non-First Citizens ATMs without a fee. The bank whose machine you use may still charge you a fee. This account also charges no overdraft protection transfer fee and comes with free unlimited personal checks and cashier’s checks.

Savings options include E.Savings, Regular Savings, Money Market savings and CDs. An E.Savings account can be opened online and it offers both competitive interest rates and a Visa debit or ATM card for on the go transactions. It also features a $0 monthly maintenance fee and a low minimum opening deposit of $25.

The Regular Savings account, by comparison, requires a $100 minimum deposit and you need to maintain a minimum daily balance of $300 to avoid a maintenance fee.

Money Market savings accounts offer a slightly higher interest rate than Regular Savings, plus debit card access. You’ll need at least $500 to open one of these accounts.

The minimum deposit for CDs ranges from $500 to $5,000, depending on the CD type and term. CD rates are tiered based on your balance.

First Citizens Bank customers can manage their accounts through online or mobile banking. Mobile check deposit is available but if you need to deposit cash or you can’t wait for a mobile check deposit to post, you can visit an Intelligent Deposit ATM 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

These machines offer on-screen verification of cash or check deposits, same-day posting for checks deposited before 9 p.m. and immediate availability of cash deposits. A shorter waiting period for deposits to post means faster access to your money when you need it.

    Horrible Experience

I have banked with FCB for 12 years. I recently started a new business, got my first order. Deposited the check of over $48K, was called and told that there would be 7 business day hold because the account was new. I expected this hold, in the mean time I tried to set up the online banking; could not. Activated my debit card, meanwhile I tried to use the 800 number, wasn't able to do that either. My wife tried to activate her card, was unsuccessful, was transferred to a customer service representative, who said her signature card wasn't on file, and the needed to be done before proceeding, and that a message was sebt, and she would be contacted the next day. No one called, so I called the branch, with whom I have no issues. I was told the woman needed to speak with me, was given her number which I called. During this conversation, I was interrogated, and treated like I was a scammer. The next day my wife received a call from her, and was treated worse, and then was hung up on. I go to the branch and find out that they are treating this as fraud, and have completely locked my account, disabled our debit cards. I was told they'd have it resolved by the next morning. Never heard back. Went the the branch, and I'm told we need to speak with the branch manager. During this, the fraud department, notified the branch that the the funds have been collected from the issuing bank. The branch manager, still did not release my account, and wanted to look into it more, saying her issue is with the check, and to give her till middle of the next week. I told her it needed to be handled by Monday at the latest. All the while I've provided the email chains to include their purchase order, the invoice from my company to theirs, and all other paperwork. I was asked if I was prepared to pay this money back if it was a scam? I asked them if they were prepared to pay me back for lost income if my customer cancels their order? My 4 week window for receiving parts and materials and completing this order is now at 1 week. So needless to say this will never be an issue for them ever again.

Mortgage got sold to this bank and has been a hassle since.

    * They don't have online method to pay the mortgage (unless you have a checking account with that bank)
    * Phone payments cost $5, which is OK, but they close at 5PM EST, so you have to make that call before 2PM PST.
    * The phone staff is a hit and miss. The line itself is a "debt collection" line. What the hell? I am trying to make a payment on my mortgage. Please take my money - but NO, they make it as hard as possible

    Pass it by ?

Having just moved down here to the, grand and glorious, 'The Villages', we quickly went about to find a local bank. Since all of the ones in town really did not have any 'good' reviews online, we took a gambit and tried Citizens First Bank. We went to the Brownwood Branch and opened up a checking account - not too bad. But then, when we had a little $ come in from a sale, we to the Lake Sumter branch to open another checking account and a savings account as well as to make an additional deposit into the first checking account. Things proceeded fairly smoothly but while taking a little time. Well, we even got past the part of having made three different deposits off of one check. Alright. Well, I was just getting ready to leave, when some "management wanna-be" comes over to the desk where we were sitting with one of the bank personnel. She exclaims, "did you see them actually sign these?" (One of the co-signers was not present at the time). The bank person replied no, but did not deny the presentation of the deposit. Then this 'wanna be' goes, "I'm going to have to take these deposit slips back!" - Wrong; actually believe she could not as the transactions had already been completed and processed, but she did anyways. I just sat there in total disbelief! So, this bank is going to call a bank customer on good faith?!? Unheard of - except by that other one - Chase Manhattan! Furthermore, the employee who had been helping me also sat there in disbelief and disarray!. Where is the bank/employee relations training here? Well, you know what I did - Yep. Walked right out of there and across the street to the closest bank and open the accounts and with a bank person who did not even blink at the back of the check! Citizens First - keep on walking!

First Citizens Is The Worst Bank I Have Ever Dealt With In My Entire Life.

The only reason i used 1s below is because negative numbers were not available. First citizens bank is the worst bank we have ever dealt with. They gave our construction loan funds to an unlicensed builder. The information they had in their file should have alerted a third grader that this guy was shady. Had they shared the information with us, we would not be in the mess we are today or out over half a million dollars. The bank paid out more than $104,000 in loan draws without our authorization.

First they said we authorized the draws by email. When they could not produce the emails, the bank attorney told the construction loan officer to change his records to verbal authorizations. When we produced our phone records to show there were no calls, they said they did not need our authorization anyway. When we found out the builder was unlicensed and alerted the bank and would not authorize those unauthorized draws the loan officer threatened us and stated we would get no more money unless we authorized the draws.

The bank flipped the loan from a construction loan to a fixed rate loan at the capped rate of 6. 25% with a payment based on the entire loan amount even though more that 95,000 dollars remained in the construction loan. There was no certificate of occupancy when they flipped the loan and using our savings and retirement accounts, it took us 6 months to get a c/o on the house. The bank paid out 74% of the loan for 40 to 50% of the work much of that incorrectly done. They have made our property unmarketable.

There are so many repairs that remain to be done, with our funds exhausted, it is impossible to complete the house. We have produced invoices and proposals for the bank to show our expenditures but they state that those numbers are made up and they refer to us as noise. We can not abandon the property which was our land free and clear. There is no way as senior citizens that we will recover as a result of the mistakes made by first citizens bank.

Shady Bank and Unethical Senior Financial Service Representative

The Senior Financial Service Rep. at the Morrison Blvd branch in Charlotte, misled us on a 2nd mortgage rate right up until we signed the papers at closing. Prior to the closing and at the closing (with five witnesses present), she confirmed that our interest rate would go down 1/4% once we opened a checking account with First Citizens and set up automatic monthly draft and then the new rate would go into effect within two weeks. After we did this, the rate was not adjusted so when following up with the Senior Financial Service Rep, she resorted to "bait and switch" tactics and claimed we "misunderstood". Her direct report won't even respond and the Ethics Department is stalling. Beware: this is a shady financial institution with unethical employees! It's shocking that they are still in business!

NOT Small Business friendly at all. Unethical bunch of Liars.

After I read hundreds of complaints against FCB, I have to post that we are right now escalating investigation complaint against them for dubious & deceitful practices, as we deal through the Bethlehem (Hickory, NC) and Viewmont (Hickory, NC) branches for some years now.

Not only has the new digital banking system launched last October been a hastle, but as many others post here regarding business problems, I have told branch managers at both offices they need to save money and remove the nice banners and signs in lobbies about how they care about small business- because that is far from the truth and this bank is NOTHING what its original proprietors set out to make it long ago. NEVER once have either branch manager given care to our customers or who we do business with locally and a base of approx 500 returning customers for our contracting services annually...

We have an FDIC complaint and investigation going on and also FINRA told us they were hit recently with $Million fine for similar practices hurting another business.

Our situation began in May, 2017 as a business LOC was set for its 2 year reset. Last period they increased it yet left my interest rate at 8% where it has been for 6 years running now. We have total of (6) various accounts with this bank even. NEVER late on anything, always paying higher principle payments on various lines we do have with them in fact, always in good standing.

But in May, we expected the business LOC to continue as always, but no! They decided not to renew it, yet stated they were taking the outstanding draw on that Line and converting it to 3 year fixed % loan at 3% higher rate! What the hell we said. Then they argued and did things against our wishes even, and the original loan they offered us, they said we took too long to accept terms, so hit our credit reports with default on a loan! All along the business LOC still showed active on the website with our other accounts, we kept making payments by due dates as it stated which FCB took out interest each time, etc..

We asked questions, demanded answers, and the branch managers acted like robots saying hardly anything except that if we signed the new conversion loan terms, they would remove late fees. The damn wording in this loan contract had I signed it stated I as the customer demanded to end my LOC and convert it to a fixed rate loan! What??? Why would any business want a line established closed up?? It hurts their business operations. We NEVER asked to end our business LOC at all. THEY (FCB) decided to do this and try to entrap us into collecting higher % rate as they knew how successful and well our local small business has been doing. This made no sense . We felt like we were being extorted or blackmailed hearing this. My wife then contacted FINRA which contacted the OCC (Office of the Comptroller of the Currency) and then NC Bank Commissioners' office where this thing is held in limbo as we wait on FDIC results. Then after many days arguing FCB came back at us with new documents for a Promissory Note now for us to sign saying we promised to repay the outstanding LOC balance within 3 years, but interest left at the 8% which the LOC was always at. But by this time, another 30 days goes by, FCB hits our credit reports still again with late fees and default and this is all wrong to see! They drove my credit score down about 200 points damnit with 6 hits on my credit report between June & August 2017! This is criminal, malicious, and wrong! The LOC which still showed active we kept making payments on monthly to be safe and not until early August did this new Promissory Note take effect and show on their system and the LOC finally disappeared. But my credit score has been brutally attacked by these idiots and they think they did nothing wrong... I am now worried with all my established vendor accounts we have in place who many do annual report pulls for our business accounts that this will further affect my business and quite possibly put me out of business!

We are searching for a lawyer at this time.

Busineses Don't bother - Horrible customer service

I've been with First Citizens with the 2 business that I am co-owner of in Greenville for many years. For a bank that was founded on "helping small businesses grow and suceed" they are quite comical since they are not helpful at all. A bank should partner with a business to help and work with them. Instead I have had years of battling every little incident and constantly hear them pass the problem off to someone else. If my business should encounter a problem with credit card processing, online access, account withdrawals, etc, I always felt like there was NO help to be found at First Citizens. Are we just not BIG enough? One company has been in business for 52 years and the other for 8 years - we're doing something right! As much of a headache as it is, I will move both companies to a bank that is helpful and not such a robot. Year after year - No help - EVER! There are much better banks out there! Run from the Augusta Road Branch.

I wish I had bothered to look at online reviews sooner. I cannot believe the number of sites that rate them a 1 star consistently. Obviously, they are used to this type of outcome since I told Kendra (branch) that I planned to post my experiences of terrible customer service on every media outlet I could find and she replied, "Okay!" The branch manager, Lesley Baker, which has never bothered to meet me did not care to speak to me herself... wow, great business service!

We encountered deceitful business practices, contradictory actions, unprofessionalism, and outdated banking systems.

The employees and management of First Citizens Bank, particularly the Olde Raleigh Village branch, have been deceptive, patronizing, and outright insulting. We transferred our multi million-dollar business bank account to First Citizens (FC) from a larger institution anticipating a friendly, local atmosphere with attention to detail and a personable staff. Unfortunately, we encountered a bank that cannot complete basic banking needs. FC repeatedly frustrated our company and our customers with its archaic banking structure and rude, offensive employees.

There is a lack of transparency and communication, from the tellers, to the Operations Manager (a teller with too much power), to the Branch Manager (newly transferred with no understanding of how FC works), to the apparently non-existent Regional Operations Manager.

When reviewing our proposal before opening the account, we were told that their outdated (circa 1998) business web portal, would be updated in a month or two; however, this never occurred. There is no live account updating so it is always a day behind. There is no way to see who sent a wire without paying a $5.00 research fee PER wire, which can only be requested at the branch where the account was created. There is no way to see to whom a wire was sent. There are no check images on statements unless you pay $30 per month, which can only be initiated on the day of account creation.

It is difficult to understand how First Citizens can successfully exist with this lack of infrastructure, technology, professionalism, integrity, and honesty. No manager seemed to be interested in our business. This consistent poor performance contrasts greatly with our new bank. I strongly discourage anyone from opening any account here due to the horrific experiences we had and the deceitful nature of some employees.
