About the Bank
First Republic Bank is a smaller bank, offering personalized banking services in selected cities across the U.S., including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland, Boston, Greenwich and New York City. In addition to retail banking, First Republic Bank also specializes in offering private wealth management services.
Despite its smaller size, First Republic features a complete range of banking products, with solutions to fit individual needs. ATM Rebate Checking is the bank's most popular checking option; this account pays interest on balances of $3,500 or more, with a $500 minimum opening deposit. The major selling point of this account is a rebate on ATM fees charged by other institutions worldwide, making it ideal if you travel internationally. That's a positive, since First Republic Bank has fewer than 70 ATM locations of its own nationwide.
Classic Checking offers unlimited use of First Republic Bank ATMs, with a low monthly minimum balance needed to avoid a monthly service fee. Basic Checking is suited for customers who don't keep a large balance in checking and have only a few transactions in or out of their account each month. Specialized checking accounts are also available for seniors over 65 or minors under 18 who are Massachusetts residents.
Saving money with First Republic Bank is relatively easy. The Passbook Savings account offers competitive rates with no monthly service fees. You need $500 to open an account. One potential drawback: you can only make deposits and withdrawals into your account at a First Republic Bank Branch. The bank doesn't offer ATM cards for these accounts.
If you want to combine higher rates on savings with ATM card access, you could open a Money Market Savings account instead. This account requires a minimum opening deposit of $5,000. The Money Market Checking account has the same minimum, but you get the added benefits of a debit card and check-writing abilities, with your first order of checks free.
First Republic offers generous interest rates on its CDs. The trade-off is that you'll need at least $10,000 to open a CD account. That's higher compared to other banks, which may only require $1,000 to open a CD. Liquid CDs are an option if you can't wait until maturity to withdraw money. These CDs allow you to access your money without a penalty as often as every seven days.
The bank offers mobile and online banking access, with the most important features you'd expect. That includes mobile check deposit, bill pay services, person-to-person payments and funds transfers. First Republic adds some extra security for mobile app users with StealthView, which dims and blurs your sensitive information if you're banking on your mobile device. You can also set up fingerprint and face ID for more secure logins.
To round things out, First Republic Bank also has you covered for borrowing. The bank makes personal and home loans, as well as offering student loan refinance services. A rate discount is available for borrowers who set up automatic payments of their loans each month.
