    One star is too much

    I set up my account when I worked for a grocery store that had a People's United Bank inside the store. At the time, it was just what I needed. Their overdraft policy was something I didn't care for but I put up with it for sake of convenience.

    3 years later, I'm given a check for $375 that I promptly deposit. The check is processed and I'm given the funds. I use the money to pay some bills and buy groceries. One week later, I'm on my way to the bank to get a $20 bill for an outing with friends, and am shocked to find my account at a balance of -$265.

    I rushed into the bank and asked what happened. They said that They gave me the funds immediately as a "courtesy" but didn't actually clear the check. They then claimed that the purchases I made after the funds were given to me, were knowingly made while the account was at a negative balance.

    I'm charged $101.36 in overdraft fees and left to scrounge up money I didn't have to pay it off. I spoke to a regional manager and this is what they had to say "it's not up to the bank to determine whether or not a check is good or not. We give funds to out customers immediately because if we didn't, businesses would crumble and the economy would crash. Nobody can wait 7 days for a check to clear, because everyone would be late on their bill payments. It's not the banks responsibility to determine whether or not the customer can back up the funds when we immediately dish them out, it's up to the customer to keep hand written documentation of their account balance. The amount stated on the website and the app that shows the funds a customer has is not relevant to how many funds the customer actually has."

    Needless to say I closed the account then and there after paying what was "due."

    Terrible service for mortgages.
    I have mortgage w/ Peoples and it is set up w/ my bank for recurring payment. I was called in early October and told my property tax escrow had gone up by $23. I made this change for my November payments. My usual October payment was counted as partial payment and not applied. I was billed $130.44 late fee. Customer Service told me payment was considered late because I had not paid property tax escrow increase of $23. I was also told if I did not pay I would be reported to credit service as delinquent on my mortgage.
    I'm questioning People's Bank Customer Service when they have a longstanding mortgage customer who has never been late and they approach me w/ this aggressive behavior. The escrow increase was .006 of my mortgage payment. The late fee of was more than 5 times payment increase of $23. They didn't even wait until my next scheduled payment that had been changed to new price.
    Where is the common sense? I'll never willingly do business with People,s Bank again seeing their approach to customers. I hope management at People's is more customer driven than their "customer service." Half way through the call I was told they could waive the fee one time but would be charged next time. I still not sure what I did wrong since I changed my upcoming scheduled payments.
    Experience left a bad taste . People's needs to take a page from credit card companies customer service.

    WORST BANK EVER

    This is pretty much the worst bank Ive ever had an account at, lots of shady practices, incompetence, hidden fees, poor customer service (they never return your calls, even with a business account!) and sub standard online features, etc.

    People's United is just like the real banks involved in the same scams, profiting from the same excessive fees that they attach to your account (with or without notice). Their customer service has zero follow up; cards and services randomly get turned off without notification; other services appear on your account you did not ask for. Dont even bother with their online banking. Its just totally broken.

    One way this bank is different from one of the name brand banks is that you still need to go down to your inconveniently located branch to do just about anything you need to do from wires to ordinary transfers.

    I have accounts with several other banks and never experienced anything like this. I finally closed my accounts in frustration; save yourself the trouble. Head to a real bank.
