    People's United Bank

I joined People's United when it was just People's Bank. It used to have reasonable credit card rates and checking fees and really seemed to be a "people's" bank. Since it has become People's United, they have become steadily greedier and increased credit card fees to the maximum - I am paying 19% for purchases and 25% for cash advances. Also, I have gone from $1 - $2 in monthly checking account fees to $20 - $30. I would switch to another bank and cancel my credit card, but with a 40 year history, I need to keep it. Don't join - it's a horrible bank.l

    One star is too much

I set up my account when I worked for a grocery store that had a People's United Bank inside the store. At the time, it was just what I needed. Their overdraft policy was something I didn't care for but I put up with it for sake of convenience.

3 years later, I'm given a check for $375 that I promptly deposit. The check is processed and I'm given the funds. I use the money to pay some bills and buy groceries. One week later, I'm on my way to the bank to get a $20 bill for an outing with friends, and am shocked to find my account at a balance of -$265.

I rushed into the bank and asked what happened. They said that They gave me the funds immediately as a "courtesy" but didn't actually clear the check. They then claimed that the purchases I made after the funds were given to me, were knowingly made while the account was at a negative balance.

I'm charged $101.36 in overdraft fees and left to scrounge up money I didn't have to pay it off. I spoke to a regional manager and this is what they had to say "it's not up to the bank to determine whether or not a check is good or not. We give funds to out customers immediately because if we didn't, businesses would crumble and the economy would crash. Nobody can wait 7 days for a check to clear, because everyone would be late on their bill payments. It's not the banks responsibility to determine whether or not the customer can back up the funds when we immediately dish them out, it's up to the customer to keep hand written documentation of their account balance. The amount stated on the website and the app that shows the funds a customer has is not relevant to how many funds the customer actually has."

Needless to say I closed the account then and there after paying what was "due."

    Terrible service for mortgages.
I have mortgage w/ Peoples and it is set up w/ my bank for recurring payment. I was called in early October and told my property tax escrow had gone up by $23. I made this change for my November payments. My usual October payment was counted as partial payment and not applied. I was billed $130.44 late fee. Customer Service told me payment was considered late because I had not paid property tax escrow increase of $23. I was also told if I did not pay I would be reported to credit service as delinquent on my mortgage.
I'm questioning People's Bank Customer Service when they have a longstanding mortgage customer who has never been late and they approach me w/ this aggressive behavior. The escrow increase was .006 of my mortgage payment. The late fee of was more than 5 times payment increase of $23. They didn't even wait until my next scheduled payment that had been changed to new price.
Where is the common sense? I'll never willingly do business with People,s Bank again seeing their approach to customers. I hope management at People's is more customer driven than their "customer service." Half way through the call I was told they could waive the fee one time but would be charged next time. I still not sure what I did wrong since I changed my upcoming scheduled payments.
Experience left a bad taste . People's needs to take a page from credit card companies customer service.

WORST BANK EVER TO DEAL WITH

This is the absolute WORST bank to deal with!!!! Because of issues with them, we closed four checking and one savings account. Looking online, there was a $10.00 charge for one of the accounts we closed. Turns out when I called customer service, it wasn't noted that this account was closed!!! Then waiting to close my 16 year old son's checking account, someone used his account number to order checks. Customer service said they couldn't take care of that and we would have to go into a branch. We did and the manager wouldn't believe that we hadn't ordered these checks online. When opening this account we said we didn't WANT checks and to note that on the account. Had to threaten to call my lawyer before they agreed to refund the $49.49 for the checks we didn't order. Then they transferred $10.00 to the account that was closed for the service charge for the month they claimed we missed in the timeframe we closed it!!! I am so glad that we are out of this bank!!!! The customer service SUCKS and they pull $$$$ out of accounts for their so called "service charges" . I have gone to DCU where we have NO problem and unlimited number of transfers between accounts with NO service charge!!!!!!

Tenant/Landlord Security Deposit Savings Account Sent To State as Dormant Account

We are very upset that Peoples United Bank Sent a Tenant/Landlord Security Deposit Savings Account to the State as Dormant. There were no notifications, either by U.S. Mail nor on my online message ability. This account was closed on 10/21/15 and I was given an 800 number to call. The State told me that it is or would take MONTHS, perhaps several, to recoup the Security Deposit.
We have owned property for decades and this has never happened with any other bank. The Lease expires at the end of December and these monies will need to come out of our pocket, plus there was a penalty of approx. $50.00, so our net amount the State would send back would be minus the penalty charged.

We are demanding that Peoples United Bank replace the monies sent to the State.

We do have several accounts with Peoples United and this will cause us to end our relationship with this Bank.

    Respectfully,

    RRR

Extremely uncooperative - not worth it if they only offer 0.1% interest more than the good banks (.001 more yield).

    Wouldn't Recommend-Particuarly For Business

Years ago my wife and i happily moved our bank accounts from bank of america to back of western massachusetts. We loved bwm! Over time bwm was purchased by chittenden then finally peoples united. With each merger are customer experience got worse. I can honestly say that people's united bank may actually be worse than boa ever was. Here is my list of complaints:

    1) PU is progressively taking longer to clear checks-now often more than one day.
    2) PU now counts all deposits made on saturday morning as being made the following monday. So if you deposit a check on saturday don't expect those funds to be available monday as they once were. There is thus no reason to bother making saturday morning deposits anymore.
    3) we had recently attempted to refinance our home through pu and was given a loan offer with a laughably high amount for closing costs. We took that business elsewhere!
    4) my daughter had a savings/checking account that went into a negative balance for a few weeks. I went to the local branch to deposit money into it but the account had been closed and could not be reopened without a fee. Td bank therefore got new 18 y/o customer as a result!
    5) most important. PU installed check reader machines two years ago that really do not work. Business deposits now entail watching the teller sift through those checks not accurately read by their faulty machines, (at least 10% of them). The time involved in making deposits has increased four fold. The bank staff are oddly unapologetic about this problem as i suppose these machines have made their jobs easier?
    6) as PU has become a worsening customer experience the fake friendliness from the branch staff has increased!

    Peoples Closing Accounts

My husband and I have been customers at Peoples for fifteen years. Just the other day we received notice that the bank was closing 2 accounts (one very active checking, one less active savings). No specific reasons were given other than a general "we're not making enough money off you" tone. We have never received any notice about insufficient activity, nor were we offered a substitute service to try and keep our business. Nothing. Just a "You're out in three weeks. Find another bank"

When I went to the local branch this morning (where the tellers know me and were very upset) they couldn't get any answers from corporate. So, I closed our 4 savings accounts (one joint, the others for our three kids). Once we have another bank lined up we close our personal and business checking accounts. We will close our safety deposit box. We will never, ever consider them for a mortgage, home equity line or any other banking service. I serve on two non profit boards and will make sure they are never considered as a banking option. My children - who we are trying to teach life lessons about money and banking - will never use them either. I used to be a big fan but now have nothing positive to say about them whatsoever.

In a highly competitive business such as banking, where everyone is tripping over themselves to get customers, this isn't how you treat the customers you have. Banking is a service industry that is built on customer relations. Customers are entrusting banks with their money. How can you trust a bank that treats customers like that?

    WORST BANK EVER

This is pretty much the worst bank Ive ever had an account at, lots of shady practices, incompetence, hidden fees, poor customer service (they never return your calls, even with a business account!) and sub standard online features, etc.

People's United is just like the real banks involved in the same scams, profiting from the same excessive fees that they attach to your account (with or without notice). Their customer service has zero follow up; cards and services randomly get turned off without notification; other services appear on your account you did not ask for. Dont even bother with their online banking. Its just totally broken.

One way this bank is different from one of the name brand banks is that you still need to go down to your inconveniently located branch to do just about anything you need to do from wires to ordinary transfers.

I have accounts with several other banks and never experienced anything like this. I finally closed my accounts in frustration; save yourself the trouble. Head to a real bank.

They make the customer jump through hoop after hoop. In addition, it takes 10 business days to get a new card. When I asked if they could rush a new one, both the representative and the manager told me I would have to pay for me new card. I would highly recommend banking with a different bank... one that puts their customers first.

    WORSE BANK EVER

Firstly, I've had this issue with them and have attempted to get help on several occasions. I've gotten no where and the messages I have been sent have been disrespectful and not at all what you would consider customer service.
Issue is that I have incurred $111 worth of overdraft fees for checks that cleared after a deposit was posted to my account. One overdraft fee took place 2 days after the fact! 2 days! One person attempted to tell me that it just looks like that but really it went in a different way! Really!!!? If that is the case then why doesn't it reflect that?!!! Your statement should look the same as what truly took place. Not something that you should just shrug your shoulders at and say okay take my money!!!
Whats worse why they had screwed up my account they throw me further in the hole by putting in a account service charge. A charge that is supposed to help my small business! Which it never has, because I had to pay an additional charge to actual see the report. The whole bank is nothing but a fancy scam. Truly hate People's United Bank and wouldn't recommend them to my worse enemy!

    This bank sucks

This bank only wants to make money. They have alot of fine print. They charge 37$ for over draft fees and charge them all the time for the stupidest little reasons and things don't go through when they should, if you don't keep up with your check book every single little thing you use your debit card for than this is not the bank for you. They also allow your debit card to work after there is no longer money in your account, and they then charge you 37$ for every single transaction after the fact, days later even if you make you account positive in the mean time. They staff is extremely rude when things aren't in their favor. Been with them 2 years and have had so many issues, I finally give up. Credit unions are where its at, and they build your credit more than a bank.
