About the Bank

Valley National Bank is a mid-sized regional bank that seeks to combine the products you'd expect from a larger bank with the personalized service available from a smaller bank. Based in Wayne, New Jersey, Valley National Bank's banking footprint extends across more than 200 branches in New Jersey, New York City and Florida.

Both personal and business banking services are available and Valley National Bank customers enjoy plenty of variety when it comes to individual financial solutions. Under the VNB My Money Checking umbrella, you'll find seven specialized checking accounts, including checking for teens and seniors, interest checking, basic checking, relationship checking for homebuyers, access checking for college students and a checking account that rewards you for banking with Valley National.

VNB All Access Rewards Checking gives you a $20 rewards credit each month for a year when you open an account with $100 and set up a qualifying direct deposit. My Choice Checking is designed for students aged 17 to 25 who are in the early stages of learning money management. This account offers up to $20 per month in foreign ATM fee rebates and up to $150 in Valley Rewards when you sign up for mobile banking, make purchases with your debit card or use Bill Pay each month. If you need something simpler, VNB Community Checking features a low opening deposit requirement of $25 and a low monthly service of just $3.

Valley National also encourages customers to save at every life stage, starting with the VNB Kids First Savings Club account. There's a special Holiday Savings Club account for setting aside money for holiday shopping and two money market savings options. One offers a tiered rate structure with a low opening deposit, a free debit card and unlimited deposits. The other features a competitive rate on money market deposits for savers who open an account with $10,000 or more. Valley National also has a regular savings account option and multiple ways to save in an Individual Retirement Account. You can set up a traditional or Roth IRA or a variable rate 18-month IRA CD. The CD's rate adjusts every month so if rates rise, you reap the benefits.

Regular CDs are also available with varying maturities. There's a 12-month CD and a 25-month Step Up CD, both of which come with generous rates. These CDs have a $500 minimum deposit and they renew automatically, making it easy to roll your savings over and continue growing your money.

If you need to trade your coins for cash or complete a foreign currency exchange, you can visit a Valley National Bank branch. Otherwise, you can handle all of your most important account tasks online or via the VNB mobile banking app. That includes paying bills, depositing checks, sending money to friends and family, setting up transfers between accounts and viewing your transaction history. Customer service is on standby via phone from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. if there's something else you need help with.

Valley National Bank - Lincoln Park

I thought I was the only person that thought VNB had terrible customer service but after speaking to someone in line with me and VNB previous reviews, I can see you continue to be one of the worst banks I deal with. I have an account with VNB, and have a pretty nice nest egg. The tellers don't smile,EVER. They are not friendly. But the worst is the desk person. The person that was there on Monday, 26th February- is probably the loudest person in the bank. She signs up new accounts in such a loud manner that I would never open another account, because everyone would hear my personal information. She's rude, unfriendly and when I suggested she might want to put a second teller on, as there was a line in the bank, and by the drive in she did not even look up from the computer to answer me.

I am seriously considering pulling my account out of the bank.

Robert D'Alessio: worst branch manager of all time!

Robert D'Alessio (Jersey City Branch Manager) is by far the very worst customer service Ambassador I have ever met. He not only insulted me but literal accused me of committing a crime. Valley National gives you on-line tools. I use their on-line tools like mobile check deposit. Robert D'Alessio had the audacity to claim my deposited check was counterfeit because it didn't look good in the picture. Again, I'm using VN technology and the check doesn't look good and somehow this becomes my fault and he makes an assumption that my check is fake? My laywer is currently looking for grounds to sue this company and its poorly-put-together branch manager. He wasn't articulate and didn't really explain his companies products very well either, and that should have been a sign for me to run out of the door and take my business elsewhere.

Worst Bank Ever for Commercial Loan

This bank is a disaster. We have a commercial loan with them and a business bank account. (The bank we made the loan with was acquired by VNB.) We cannot automatically pay our VNB loan with our VNB account. The online system is a disaster - so inefficient. Ever customer service person you call gives you a different answer. It takes forever for them to pull up my accounts' information - so, I believe they don't have a centralized computer system. Their tellers are lazy - I asked one to add up a deposit and he refused because he didn't have a calculator. A bank teller who doesn't have a calculator, seriously? I would give them a negative number if I could.

Terrible Customer Service, On Line Banking is Ruse to Charge Overdraft Fees!

Yesterday, I went on line to see my balance. It showed I had XXX.XX as an available balance. An hour later, I went to a Valley National ATM to take out some money. Low and behold, the receipt showed my balance was a lot lower. I went to my branch to find out what was going on and was told that was because I had recent purchases with my debit card that were on hold. Then why didn't my on line account history show those items as they're usually displayed and deducted from the on-line available balance? I never use my debit card without checking my balance first. Then I was told that it's my responsibility to keep track of all my uses with the card. Isn't that why we have computers and smart phones nowadays since not everyone can keep track of every last transaction they make? This is how they (think) they can get away with BS overdraft charges. I felt insulted and likely will be pulling my account soon.

Also, 2 weeks ago, I applied for overdraft protection. Think I ever got an answer in the mail like I was promised? No wonder there's so many negative reviews here about this bank.

    Fraudulent charges

I recently purchased a new car and because I was waiting for a settlement check the dealer set up financing with Valley National Bank . As anyone who has ever purchased a car knows, they will not let you take the car off the lot without insurance. To my surprise when 1 month later when I got my settlement check and went to pay off the car loan I found out that Valley National Bank was charging me an additional $4,614. for insurance, claiming that I had not provided them with proof of insurance (which by the way I had 3 times). The irony of this is that if I had not called to find out the exact amount of the pay off I would not have even known they had applied this exorbitant and fake charge to my account. And to add insult to injury, the car has been paid off but the insurance charge still exists.

Clearly this is an organization that tries to take advantage of the consumer and can not be trusted.

Zero stars is more like it. Worse bank i have ever dealt with. They cause your account to be overdrawn and then charge you an insufficient fund fee. I can't afford to bank at Valley National. And it's almost impossible to find anyone to help because they all claim to not have authority to protect your money. I banked with Valley for 1 year and it's been the worst decision i have ever made. Their system is so out dated. They don't even have the machine that counts the money (they sit there with their calculator and adding machine and sometimes called over another teller to recount the bills). It's a joke how they always ask you to call the 800 number to correct errors because they are not authorized to fix errors that they caused. I swear I think they have a big mattress in the back that they put our money under. Your cash is unprotected. I spoke to them about a transaction that was incorrectly put on my account from a third party (being that it was pending, i let them know that it wasn't authorized by me). They told me there wasn't anything that they can do. I felt that my money was so unprotected and that eventhough I was asking them to note that this was an unauthorized transaction, they did nothing. I called the third party and they removed the charge and apologized for the error. I called back Valley and they had nothing to say. I have had so many problems with my account that I am just waiting for my direct deposit to post and then I will close out my checking as i just closed out my savings account.

HR person in my company said it would be no problem to cash my check there because we do all the business banking and payroll through them even with all of this assurance I went there and was treated like I wanted to rob the place because I have and account but not with branch I was treated so rude by the unprofessional bank manager who may I might add were all siting at their empty desks since it was only me and one other customer in the place. Our HR person told me to tell them to call if they have a problem and the manager yelled at her about me not having an account in her branch and this was a one time only thing I will do for him. I was so affected by this treatment once my transaction with them was completed I called my wife and told her to close our other Valley National account which I had my entire my savings I wouldn't go back them if they begged me and believe me they try everything to get us to stay since we were a long time customer!

Total Scam-Beware Of The $499 Low Refinance Rate, They Will Take The Money And Deny The Mortgage

Recently we applied for the valley national $499 refinance special. My husband and i have amazing credit history and we had just applied with another bank prior to dealing with valley national. Our house was appraised but we did not go with the first bank because the deal with valley national seemed much cheaper considering the $499. Valley national had assured us that the $499 is non-refundable only if for any reason we refuse the loan. We agreed and filled all the paperwork with valley national to start the process. They gave us a good faith estimate and sent over their own appraiser/.

Two weeks later we were denied the loan due to our house being under-appraised/. We were absolutely shocked! The valley national appraiser valued our house at almost $100,00 less than the appraiser from the other bank we turned down, only 2 months prior!! We live in a very affluent area in long island, with one of the best school districts in america;. The value the valley national bank appraiser gave our home is a joke! No home in this area can be bought at the price he gave our home?. We soon found out that not only was our loan denied, but the $499 fee was not refundable|.

Obviously, suspecting a scam i decided to do some research on valley national and i found a pattern of the exact same type scams reported by many other people.... Underestimate and appraisal leading to no refund of $499. I want to prevent this from happening to anyone else so i am trying to really spread the word and try to ask anyone for help to get our money back. It should be illegal to take advantage of innocent families that are trying to refinace their homes and fall under this horrible valley national scheme!

So Unhappy, Rude Customer Service, Unnecessary Fees

I refinanced my house through Valley National and do not use them for my online banking. I have one credit card set up on AutoPay through this account. Last month while I was traveling for business, the creditor tried to obtain payment from my account which had insufficient funds. When I returned from my trip, I immediately made a deposit to cover the funds. Valley charged me $35/day for three days in a row (including the day I made the deposit) and an additional $15 fee for the account dipping below the minimum balance which was a result of their penalty charges. I called the manager at the Caldwell branch to explain I was out of town and kindly requested that one of the $35 fees be removed since the money was available. She was rude and adamant that nothing could be done but that she would make the request. Now, two weeks later, and I receive my statement showing the $120 in fees for the month. I'm told that the computer system is responsible for charging me and there's no way to override it....complete BS. Again, I was treated rudely and the situation hasn't been resolved. I doubt she ever tried to resolve it in the first place. Next call is corporate. I have no problem paying a fee for a legitimate charge, but I called my credit card company and they did not charge Valley any fees.

    Horrible Customer Service

Apparently they're switching to new debit cards. I received a call on 10/29/15 from the branch where I opened my account and they told me I hadn't activated it. I honestly didn't know what the person was talking about. I told her I didn't receive it. She kept insisting I did. I told her all of my mail was open and if I did receive it, I must have overlooked it and threw it away. Either way, I don't have it. All she kept saying was, "You did receive. We sent all of them out." I wasn't sure how else to get the point across that I did not have it. I asked her what she can do. She said she'll have to call "headquarters" and see IF they can send me a new card. I said great. So the next day I had trouble when I tried to use my current debit card, which I thought was just the place I was at. Then I tried to use it the following night at two different ATMs and was told my card was cancelled. I called the following morning to find out why. The representative, a different person, told me it was cancelled because I said I never received the new card. She tells me a new one has been sent. What no one explained to me was that the card I already had and the card I apparently threw out, thinking it was an offer and not a mandatory thing, were the same number. So when they cancelled the one I threw out, they cancelled my current one. Do I comprehend what happened? Sure. As I told this representative. What I don't comprehend is why I was never informed about this. Why I wasn't contacted. Also, a new card will take 7-10 business days. When most business days say this, you receive it in a week, Trust me! Not Valley National! I've also had my information stolen, attempted to be stolen, lost my card. Always takes 2+ weeks to get a new card. Not a clue why. Anyway, the woman was rude and defensive. I work in retail and know how to treat customer. This company, sucks ultimately. I will be closing my account. I've been with them awhile, since my job is associated with them. I'm done!!
