As Sony ramps up operations to restore the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services, the tech company insists that there is no sign that customers’ credit card information was stolen.
Sony (NYSE: SNE) reaffirms the lack of proof that credit card information of its customers were stolen by hackers who infiltrated the company’s servers, according to a letter to publishing partners obtained by IndustryGamers.com.
Over the weekend, Sony began restoring the PlayStation Network in phases and online connectivity has already been restored for most regions of the world. Meanwhile, the company is working on bringing back PlayStation Store and Qriocity digital purchasing features.
Kazuo Hirai, Executive Deputy President of Sony Corp., noted in a relaunch announcement video that Sony has upgraded their network with “advanced security technology, increased levels of encryption, additional firewalls, and early warning systems.”
In the letter sent to publishers on May 12, Rob Dyer, Senior Vice President of Public Relations, wrote, “there remains no evidence that the credit card information was stolen and the major credit card companies are still reporting that they have not seen an increase in fraudulent transactions due to this event”
Approximately 77 million customers affected by the cyber attack on April 17-19 will be required to change their passwords as soon as they log into their accounts. But, Sony acknowledged that personal information, including names, birth dates, addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers, may have been obtained by hackers.
In response to the concern of identity theft, Sony is offering affected customers the chance to enroll in a 12-month identity protection program.
Sony continues advising customers to stay aware of phishing emails and fake phone calls and to not share personal and financial information with unknown contacts.
