The new United MileagePlus® Club Card from Chase will fill the spot of the former Continental Airlines Presidential Plus Card, which will be reissued with a new design to current cardholders, but is no longer available to new applicants.

The features of the United MileagePlus® Club Card are very similar to its predecessor.

The premium airline rewards credit card offers a full United lounge membership, free checked bags (first two) and priority check-in, security, boarding and baggage handling. However, most consumers would me more interested in the travel rewards.

In 2010, United Airlines and Continental airlines entered a merger agreement, creating the largest airline in the world. The company has since been transitioning Continental-branded credit cards to United. As of March 3, 2012, all flights flew under the United logo.

With the United MileagePlus® Club Card, cardmembers earn 2 miles for every dollar spent on United airfare and 1.5 miles per dollar spent on everything else — with no expiration date on the miles for the life of the account. There are also no foreign transaction fees.

The Continental Airlines Presidential Plus Card, which is no longer available to new customers, pays out 2 miles for every dollar spent on United airfare as well, but the card offers a standard 1 mile per dollar on all other purchases.

“There are no plans to terminate Presidential Plus for existing customers,” said a spokesperson for Chase Card Services in an email.

Anyone with the Presidential Plus can convert their card to the new United MileagePlus® Club Card. “Existing cardmembers can call the number on the back of their card to inquire about their options,” the spokesperson said.

Other perks of the MileagePlus Club Card include personal concierge, complimentary amenities at over 700 hotels and resorts worldwide and travel, purchase and fraud protection.

However, the card carries a $395 annual fee — a hefty price tag for any consumer who is not a frequent flier with United Airlines. It’s worth noting that a regular United Club membership costs $475 per year.

And, with a 15.24% variable APR, prospective cardmembers must be able to pay off their balances at the end of every month to avoid large interest payments.

The United MileagePlus® Explorer Card — the younger brother to the MileagePlus Club Card — has a $95 annual fee but offers reduced perks and lower mileage rate.
