The recent Supreme Court decision to uphold the Affordable Healthcare Act has caused Americans to reexamine healthcare access and costs. As economists, bioethicists and politicians debate the broader issues of healthcare, the basic question of how to find the right doctor at the right price is rarely discussed.
While economic stories about rising costs dominate the headlines, many dentists and doctors are so underutilized that they are offering reduced prices to attract patients. Yet, one of the key challenges facing most families is finding out which doctors want your business and how much a procedure will cost.
No one would suggest that anyone should choose a doctor or dentist based solely on cost. However, with the complexities of insurance and soaring out-of-pocket costs, today’s healthcare consumer wants more control over their budget by understanding the price up front.
The following tips will help you confidently navigate your way to a doctor with a price that is right for you.
1. Ask before you buy. Very few people have a clear understanding of how much a procedure will cost before they get it. In fact, there is a wide range of prices for the same procedure, often within just a few miles. This discrepancy in pricing underscores the need to know pricing up front and to shop around. Remember, physicians have to pay for malpractice insurance, rent, medical supplies, laboratory tests, staff salaries and more, and they deserve to make a profit, but most will prefer a happy new patient compared to an empty exam room.

A national study by the Center for Studying Health System Change (HSC) revealed that half of all consumers relied on word-of-mouth recommendations from friends and relatives when choosing a new physician. Friends and family can provide information on their own personal experiences, but are rarely qualified to make a recommendation for your specific medical and financial needs. 5. Your time is money.
