5 Apps for All Your Tax-Filing Needs

SnaptaxSnapTax comes from Intuit’s TurboTax, one of the most popular tax-preparation softwares. The app is straightforward and has one of the more interesting concepts: you take a picture of your W2 and the app is able to extract information from your W2 into the tax forms. You also have the option of entering information from 1099-INT, 1099-G or 1098-E forms as well, though you won’t be able to snap photos of those.

Then you enter some simple information and you can file your taxes from your phone. Having the ability to file straight from your phone is definitely a convenience that other apps don’t offer.

Dictionary of Tax Terms

Dictionary of Tax TermsThis app, as its name implies, is a dictionary of tax terms. Dictionary of Tax Terms is not for the faint of heart, but if you actually have to deal with “capital gains distributions” or “horizontal equities” or “1031 tax-free exchanges,” then this dictionary app will come in handy.

This app is currently in the iTunes store for $3.99.

TaxCasterTaxCaster is also from TurboTax, but this tax app is more of a tax forecaster than an actual filing system. With this app, after you enter information about yourself, and then approximations for income(s), investments, and capital gains. Once you enter in the amount of federal and state taxes that have been withheld from your income(s), then TaxCaster approximates how much your federal and state refunds will be.

This app is better for getting a general sense of your taxes than for putting together anything concrete, and an app better used months before tax season so you have a better sense of how big or small your refunds are going to be.

irs2goIRS2Go is the Internal Revenue Service’s own app. It’s not the sexiest app, but it does give you basic information on the tax-filing process. You can get your refund status and your tax records, granted you’ve already filed and you know all your information off the top of your head.

There is nothing fancy about this app, but it gets you the most important piece of information you need to know: when your money is going to get back to you.

BlockMobileBlockMobile is a tax app from H&R Block, and does mainly what TaxCaster does in terms of estimating your federal and state refunds based on information about your income and withholdings. In addition, there is an option to check on the status of a refund after you’ve already filed.

If you’re already an H&R Block customer, there are also options on the app to look up H&R Block centers, as well as look into their other products and services. BlockMobile also provides a handy tax checklist for users, listing the things that individuals might need if they file, including checklists for self-employment, rental income, and investments.
