The 1975 American documentary, Grey Gardens, captured the everyday lives of two reclusive social lites related to Jacqueline Kennedy. Big Edie, Jacqueline's aunt, and Little Edie, Jacqueline's cousin, were left alone to live in their increasingly decrepit mansion after Phelan Beale, Big Edie's husband, left. In 1971, inspectors slammed the Beales with violations, threatening to evict them unless the house was cleaned. Jackie O. stepped in and paid $32,000 to clean the house, create a new plumbing system, and take away 1,000 bags of garbage.
