5 Royal Baby Expenses

How Much?

Just how much does it cost to give birth to a royal baby? Now that Prince William and Kate Middleton's son has arrived, the third in line to inherit the throne, some are asking that question. According to estimates from around the web, a stay in the exclusive Lindo Wing at London's St. Mary's Hospital will cost about $16,000 to $20,000 or higher.

Delivery Costs in a Private Suite

ABC News reported that delivery in a standard room costs $7,500 for regular birth, but the Duchess of Cambridge is rumored to be staying in a higher-priced suite. Delivery costs rise to $10,000 if the birth is by cesarean section, and additional costs, such as consultants and a standard parenting class are not included in those costs.

Additional nights on the postnatal floor range in cost as well. A standard room is said to cost about $1,400, while a "deluxe" room runs just under $1,700. However, the Ottawa Citizen reports the price of a suite isn't listed on the hospital's website, which would not load at the time of this writing. The Guardian newspaper estimates the total cost of a two-night stay to run about $25,000.

The Exclusive Lindo Wing

Princess Diana gave birth to sons William and Harry in the Lindo Wing. In addition to a full delivery staff, nurses, midwives, and a 24-hour nursery, the hospital provides critical and specialist care givers if complications arrive in the delivery.

Further, a full catering staff is said to be available, along with a wine list. In standard rooms, fathers-to-be are provided with cots for delivery night and reclining chairs for additional nights. Reportedly, waiting dads are not allowed to order from the menu, but it is unclear if there are exceptions for royalty.

Costly Renovations

Pictured are the gates to Kensington Palace, where the couple resides. While the couple is being lauded for plans to provide greater shared parenting than previous royal babies have received, the couple has been criticized for spending.

Last month, it was reported their renovations to their Kensington Palace home cost taxpayers over $2.5 million. The couple also paid for fixtures and finishing touches, but the building repairs such as new heating, electrical, and plumbing systems and a new roof were paid by the government.

Dad Will Join Mom for Two Weeks

New dad Prince William is going to take a two-week paternity from his job as a Royal Air Force helicopter rescue pilot. In the United Kingdom, new fathers are guaranteed paid paternity leave of about $210 USD or 90 percent of their earnings, whichever is lower. The prince will take the $210 statutory stipend.
