A FatWallet thread is spreading news that TurboTax is currently offering free downloads of the popular tax preparation software only for Mac OS X systems.
The Basic, Deluxe, Premier, and Home & Business versions are available for download at no cost - these include electronic filing of federal and state tax returns for tax year 2011.
Heed the FatWallet moderator comment though: "Members of our community have alerted us to the questionable nature of this deal. While we do not condone any unethical or illegal behavior, we believe discussion and debate helps our community make informed decisions."
It is a bit odd that TurboTax is able to offer their desktop software for free (I was unable to find a promotion page of any kind).
If this turns out to be a true deal, then it's a great deal for taxpayers who won't be relying on a professional tax preparer this year.
