Calculation Methodology: We project how your savings grow from today until retirement based on your contributions and return rate. We estimate annual retirement needs from your spending goal and other income, then check whether your savings last through your life expectancy. Estimates only—not financial advice. Actual results depend on markets, taxes, and life changes.
How to use the retirement lifestyle calculator
Use this calculator to estimate whether your current savings plan can support the retirement lifestyle you want, and what may need to change if you are not on track. Enter your details in the form on the left, then click Calculate to see your personalized results. You can adjust any input and calculate again to compare different scenarios.
Step 1: Enter your current age and retirement age
Under Plan, enter your age today and the age when you plan to retire. These two fields set your timeline and tell the calculator how many years you have left to save before retirement begins.
Step 2: Enter your annual pre-tax income
Under Income, add your current yearly income before taxes. This helps the calculator estimate future income, retirement spending when you enter a percentage, and monthly contributions when you enter a percentage of income.
Step 3: Set your monthly budget in retirement
Still under Income, tell us how much you expect to spend each month once you retire. Use the % toggle to enter spending as a percentage of your projected income at retirement. Use the $ toggle to enter a monthly amount in today’s dollars. The calculator shows the equivalent value in the other format below the field so you can use whichever is easier.
Step 4: Add other retirement income
Enter any monthly income you expect from sources outside your investment portfolio, such as Social Security, a pension, or rental income. This reduces the amount your personal savings need to cover each month in retirement.
Step 5: Enter your current retirement savings
Under Savings, add the total you have saved today across 401(k), IRA, and other retirement accounts. This is the starting balance the calculator uses to project future growth.
Step 6: Set your monthly contributions
Enter how much you save toward retirement each month. You can enter a dollar amount or a percentage of your monthly income using the % and $ toggles. If your contribution is entered as a percentage, it can grow over time along with your income based on your salary increase assumption in Advanced settings.
Step 7: Adjust advanced settings (optional)
Open Advanced if you want to fine-tune the assumptions behind your projection:
- Life expectancy sets how long the plan should cover spending in retirement.
- Annual income increase (%) reflects expected salary or wage growth before you retire.
- Inflation rate (%) adjusts future spending and other income for rising prices.
- Pre-retirement return (%) is the average annual return you expect while you are still saving.
- Post-retirement return (%) is the average return you expect after retirement, when your portfolio may hold a more conservative mix.
You can leave the defaults in place for a first run, then adjust them to test more conservative or optimistic scenarios.
Step 8: Click Calculate
When your inputs are complete, click the green Calculate button. The calculator validates your entries and builds your retirement projection. If a field needs correction, a message appears below that field.
Step 9: Review your results
After you calculate, your results appear on the right side of the calculator:
- Plan funding score shows how fully your projected savings cover your estimated target, shown as a percentage.
- Projected savings, Target amount, and Gap vs. goal summarize where you stand at retirement age.
- Your plan vs. recommended plan compares your current inputs with a suggested path, including monthly contribution and how long savings may last.
- Savings growth by age shows a chart and table of estimated savings over time compared with the amount needed at each age.
Switch between Chart and Table in the savings growth section to view your projection visually or year by year. Use Export CSV to download the table data.
Try changing one input at a time, such as retirement age, monthly contributions, or expected returns, then click Calculate again to see how each choice affects your plan.
