About the Bank
BMO Harris Bank is one of the country’s larger regional banking operations, with over 600 branches and 1,300+ ATMs in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, Arizona and Florida. Its banking services are divided into four main branches: personal banking, wealth management, small business banking and commercial banking
For personal banking customers, BMO Harris offers everything you’d need to manage your financial life, including:
- Checking accounts
- Savings accounts, money market accounts and CDs
- Retirement accounts and investments
- Credit cards
- Mortgages and home equity loans
- Auto loans
- Personal loans and lines of credit
Checking account options include the SmartMoney account, which has a low monthly maintenance fee but charges no overdraft or insufficient fund fees, and the SmartAdvantage account, which has a $0 monthly fee when you sign up for electronic statements. Both of these accounts offer unlimited access at more than fee-free 40,000 BMO Harris and Allpoint ATMs nationwide.
The Premier checking account allows for unlimited non-BMO Harris ATM transactions, plus a $25 monthly rebate on ATM surcharge fees from other banks. This account carries the highest monthly maintenance fee, which is waivable when you maintain a $25,000 minimum daily balance. In terms of fee-free ATM access alone, BMO Harris outshines many regional banks with the size of its network.
BMO Harris features three accounts for growing your money: Statement Savings, Select Money Market and CDs. The Statement Savings account is designed for people who are ready to start saving for the first time. Deposits earn interest and you can set up automatic transfers from another BMO account to grow your savings faster. Select Money Market savings offers higher interest rates for savers who keep a larger balance in their account. CD options include standard CDs, step-rate CDs and special promotional rate CDs. You'll need at least $5,000 to open a special 31-month CD but the rates are highly competitive compared to what other banks offer.
If you want to save for retirement, you can open an IRA Premium Savers account with as little as $100. These accounts offer variable interest rates but they're safer than investing in the market. They have no monthly maintenance fee and you can make new contributions at your own pace, whether that's weekly, monthly or annually.
BMO Harris Bank offers three credit card choices designed to fit different spending styles. The BMO Harris Bank Platinum Rewards Mastercard®, for instance, combines rewards with a low introductory APR on balance transfers and purchases. The BMO Harris Bank Platinum Rewards Mastercard® offers a higher rewards rate, along with a larger new account bonus but unlike the Platinum Rewards card, this card carries an annual fee. The BMO Harris Bank Cash Back Mastercard® is for spenders who want to earn cash back without paying an annual fee.
You can easily access and manage your account by phone, online or from your mobile device. One unique feature of the mobile banking app is Mobile Cash, which allows you to withdraw cash from designated BMO Harris ATMs without using your ATM or debit card.

Worst of the worst
If you're a Canadian cross border banker, stay away from BMO Harris. They offer you nothing but headache and frustration. Initial opening process was fine until you started dealing with BMO Harris Customer Care Team. They either had no idea how to deal with a cross border banker or no way to help achieve any resolution. Card activation process and PIN change became toothless. Their online banking system is below average when you could even get much better system from the smallest community bank at a border town.
I never have had M&I Bank in the past but as far as I'm aware of, M&I Bank had a much more interactive UI and people.
Just stay away.... save yourself some hassle.Thank you for your feedback Is this review helpful?

As an ex employee..
As an ex exployee. I sit and read all of these reviews and nod my head in agreement. Customer service is swamped with phone calls with issue after issue. Many of the staff are overworked and stressed. Procedures change almost daily so it is impossible to keep up. As a result the wrong info is given out and customers get angry because they were told something different from someone else.I can tell you bankers, customer service reps, tellers are always trying to make their customers experiences better. When this concern is relayed to upper management, the top ignores most of the advice.Top management only cares about the money, that is all. Banking is a big business not a charity. The system at BMO is made to fail their customers.Top management doesnt deal with clients directly, but have cushy offices and drive their Mercedes., If they cared, the system would work in the customers favor. Please be kind to your bankers and tellers. They get yelled at often and get called horrible names. So if you wonder why they arent smiling dont take it personally. There is ALOT of pressure for banking employees. They have rules and regulations to follow or risk losing their jobs.
We deal with difficult customers too. I could no longer work here again because of the stress and constant negativity. Some like to start problems and are NEVER satisfied. They say they will go to a different bank but they bring their negative personality with them and guess what? They arent satisfied there either. But I truely feel bad for the others who have been wronged by the bank and get charged fees or are given wrong information, etc. Top management needs to take these complaints to heart and step up.Thank you for your feedback Is this review helpful?

Unexcusable phone wait times, horrible on-line functionality.
All I can say is that I wasted an hour trying to get in contact with an agent on the phone or online chat. Web site is the most burdensome experience I have ever had compared many other banking sites I have accounts with. I don't think this bank has figured out that most of us don't want to drive to an office and talk to a banker.
Once I can figure out how to, I will be closing my accounts with this institution.Thank you for your feedback Is this review helpful?
