Too many fees
I understand that it is not the banks fault if my account doesn't have to funds for a transaction but right now during this pandemic they have charged me almost $300 in fees since March 17th. I called because like many Americans I lost my job as a waitress. I called and asked for help like the website said and someone in India answered and couldn't help me so I called the branch same thing. How can you justify charging someone on disability who only worked part time and is now laid off that much in fees. I would never recommend this bank to anyone especially the way they are handling this crisis and their customers. If my stimulus check wasn't going into the account I would say screw them and never pay the fees but I do not have a choice. Already have a new bank account.

Bank of the West is an excellent bank with professional customer service.
Bank of the West was good to me for over 20 yrs, but when I accidently compromise my account, they made my life a living hell when it was placed on deposit restrictions. They told me if some direct deposits came through while, they amicably told me to go do business else well which I did, they would release the funds and closed the account. My daughter received her back pay from her father's social security benefits, they wouldn't release the deposit to me claiming my social didn't match which was flat out Bull!!! I went to social security office and they told me the check went to the right person which was me. I'm totally disenchanted with Bank of the West. I believe that BOW was being vindictive towards me because I accidently comprised my account. Be an excellent customer and they will treat you with out most professionalism, if you make a boo boo, the Vice President and second to him or her, they will make your life a living hell and a nightmare for two months for me. It's a shame really is.

Incredible Customer Service --- Amira Askew
I have been a Bank of the West customer for 7 years. I have had some good experiences with the bank, meaning they always resolve problems I have. I have liked the "small" feel of Bank of the West.
Recently, I had an experience with this branch in Portland that was so unbelievably great, I had to post a review. In all my years of banking, which is 25+ I have never had a manager, a customer service rep or a teller be so thoughtful, considerate and have so much follow on an issue. This person actually cared what was happening with me. That is rare in this day and age.
I had a special need to retrieve documentation from 2012 and 2013. This information was no longer available online. Amira Askew, went above and beyond to get me this information. Although she has a very busy schedule and work load in the branch, she used any available moments to research my needs. It took her several days to complete this very difficult and tedious task. She was a like a pit bull who would not let go of the problem until it was solved.
Beyond that she was amazingly kind, respectful, and always thinking about my needs, although my request put a lot of strain on her daily duties. She came through with flying colors.
It should be said that I contacted three other Bank of the West customer service people before Amira, who all declined to help me because the task is so arduous. The information Amira was able to get for me is life changing information.
I will forever be a customer at the Halsey Street location because they clearly care about their customers, and Amira demonstrated that like no other banking person I have EVER experienced.
My heartfelt thanks and appreciation go out to Amira and Bank of the West.

Horrible or Incompetent, hard to know La Mesa Branch
*This is the worst bank EVER, this particular location with this staff and manager is the only branch I know about. My parents loved this bank where they lived before and insisted on maintaining their accounts at this bank when they moved here. Aside from the first month or so we have had nothing but inconvenience and now outright trouble accessing our accounts. My father passed away in the spring. We spoke with bank to ensure accounts were in good shape for mom to keep using. We asked if changes needed to be made to the account, which is a trust. We provided death certificate and were told all was fine.
Apparently the teller helping mom, instead of just making changes indicating dad was dead, froze all assets! Seriously, all assets. So mom went grocery shopping and NO money. Called bank, back and forth THREE times on the phone and twice in person. Each time they insisted, somewhat patronizingly, that the account was fine and mom could get to her money fine. Well, each time she couldn't. We talked to the manager several times and she insisted they had done nothing wrong and her account was not frozen. Finally someone found the mistake the teller made. It was quickly corrected 3 days later! 3 days! Of course no apologies, didn't matter to them. Poor mom.Now we have a check to the trust to deposit-again, deposit, deposit into her account. So the first time mom and I went in to deposit the check I forgot the deposit slip (do banks still use these?) and didn't know the account number, or her social security number (which I finally got her to stop carrying in her purse). Apparently a drivers license isn't adequate. So the teller looked the check over and told me they couldn't look up the account with only a drivers license, we needed to bring back the account number and a completed deposit slip. So we went back with a deposit slip and the account number. Now here is the specialty of BOTW.... There is NOW a rule that they didn't mention last time....so SUDDENLY they are unable to deposit the check to the trust (the trust it is made out to, the EXACT SAME check she looked over earlier) because dad didn't sign the check... Remember, this is the trust account we discussed with them earlier, when dad died but now, months later, we are unable to deposit funds needed for mom's care because the check is to mom AND dad.

Fees!!!
At my branch in Lake Tahoe the customer service has always been good, which was nice. I was relatively indifferent otherwise UNTIL they first changed my free checking account to an "easy checking" =more fees! That upset me. Then, I signed up for "debit card overdraft protection" which was vaguely described online and sounded like--overdraft protection. Which it is not! $175 in fees for 2 days of overdraft! My savings account was not touched at all...I called my local branch and talked with a representative who offered to talk to her manager about possibly reversing one of the fees for me. I am still closing both of my accounts and moving to a smaller, more local bank, and on principle would not recommend banking here.

Horrible, They Disgust Me! They Do Not Care About The Customer At All!!
My wife and i have been loyal customers with bank of the west for over 20 years, way back when it was still commercial federal. We had both personal and business accounts with them. When we had our business accounts with them, we ran $500,000 a year through there bank. But we recently had to close our business and our accounts. When we did this there was a line of credit that we still owed to them. It took "them" over 2 months to switch it from a line of credit to loan because the accounts where now closed.
In the meantime there was a miss understanding of how much the payment was and when it would be due. I made a couple small payments to try to keep it current, well within 3 months and a miss understanding and $261 they closed the account and sent it to a collection agency, just within 3 months and i even made some payments. There is loyalty for ya! Thatâ?? S how you treat a customer that had all their banking business with you for many years, even before it was actually bank of the west and it was commercial federal. Bank of the west sucks! And i am closing and moving my accounts to another bank.
I wonder how much money they made off us all these years and they are worried about a few bucks! Thatâ?? S the problem these days; itâ?? S all about the large corporation and the all mighty dollar, not customer service or customer care. Hopefully millions of people will read this before putting their hard earned savings and faith with these corporate money hungry $%&@#

Use to be good, New management horrible customer service
For 17 years a friend brought flowers from her garden to Bank of the West in Forestville. She made arrangements and gave beautiful bouquets to each teller. She did this at no charge and only to be nice. Forestville is a small town and she did this with all the businesses. She would come into the employee room with a bucket of flowers, separate them into individual vases and give them to each teller.
New management took over a year ago, they hired a trainee, Joel, He had only been working at the bank for a short time. When he saw my friend with the flowers go into the employee room, He followed her in, demanded she leave immediately and never go into "his" employee room again. He was very rude, and unprofessional in his demeanor. Subsequently, Bank of the West now pays money to an outside flower vendor.
My complaint, with this new trainee Joel is about my son. My son went to the bank to open an account. He had him put all his money in a long term cd (at extremely low interest) Now they want to charge him over $300. to take his money out. The trainee, did not explain other options such as a money market. Neither did he offer a short term cd. This trainee is incompetent, with extremely poor customer service. I have banked with Bank of the west for over 20 years and run approximately a million dollars per year through their bank. I am slowly removing all my accounts. Is this review helpful?

Mortgage Loan through Montclair Branch in Oakland, CA
I have had only one experience with Bank of the West and this experience involves attaining a mortgage loan through the Montclair Branch in Oakland, California. My overall experience was very poor with heavy emphasis toward the loan officer with this branch. I found the loan approval process to lack transparency, the loan officer to be incapable of providing any effective guidance throughout the process, and the bank as a whole unacceptable in its inability to communication information among all touch points in the loan application/approval process.
In determining if a potential client qualifies for a particular mortgage loan, one would expect the bank to be able to communicate a strong estimate within a reasonable amount of time. In my experience with Bank of the West, it took over two months before the bank was able to provide any response to my application. A significant amount of money was spent during these two months to push the loan application forward (e.g. appraisal, inspection, etc...). The initial response I received from the bank, post two months, was an acceptance letter by mail. The property seller and I (the buyer) both made plans for next steps after receiving the approval letter. Two days later, I was then contacted by the loan officer, via my agent, that the loan was denied. In investigating what happened throughout the process and why the confounding results took place, the loan officer had absolutely no input. The loan officer showed no knowledge of the process, how to identify and resolve issues, nor what to expect in the outcome.
I was strongly disappointed with my experience with Bank of the West (Montclair Office) and I strongly urge others to avoid this bank, this branch, and certainly the corresponding loan officer.

worst bank ever- Bank of the West
This is the worst bank ever. I would give them zero 0's if I could. They have sent me 3 different debit cards over the past month. all different numbers. They cancel my card all the time for no reasons. They claim that they call me first. They have never called. They claim that it is illegal to call a cell phone only a land line. Who has a land line?. I spoke to my other bank and they say that it is not illegal. I have all of my payments set up on auto pay so they are bouncing all over the place. When you ask them, all they say is that all you need to do is call the 1 800 number. They do not care. Run from this one! it took me a year to switch everything over to this bank. Big regrets as I have to start all over and transfer everything out of Bank of the West

Lying cheating incompetent
Have an auto loan that I spent four months trying to gey on automatic debit, they finally debited my checking account twice in the same month. Service center clerks in Omaha Nebraska are lying and incompetent. They cannot return the second debit in a timely manner. They play with your interest charged when you send in additional loan payments and you MUST watch each payment you make online to insure they do NOT charge you interest on payments made in advance rather than credit your loan in the full amount made as an additional payment. Basically it's a bank game to increase their income and stall with refunds rightfully due to the their customers. I'm sure FEDERAL REGULATORS will love the scenario once reported. There are no bank officers who will talk to you, just clerks who read from scripts and have no authority. Deal with another reputable bank unless you want ripped off......

Never Again
I have had a loan out with Bank of the West for a couple years now for my car. I always make my payments on time (with autopay). Recently I had to change checking accounts due to fraud. I went online and after painstakingly being redirected from site to site to site I was finally able to log in and make my December payment with my new account number. Nowhere on the webpage does it state that adding your account online will not apply it to future payments. Fast forward two months and I get a call from collections saying (quite rudely) that my payments are past due. This was the first call I ever received from BOW and they talked to me like a criminal on the run. I try to explain the situation to the collections agent that I had actually added my payment account online and he informed me that in order to change autopays you have to MAIL IN a PAPER packet with a voided check. I'm sorry, but I thought this was 2016 and we had the internet now. Also, nowhere on the website does it say that adding your account online only works for one time payments. Here I am, a loyal customer who did what I thought I needed to do to make payments on time and now I take a hit on my credit and I'm stuck with late fees. I talked to customer service who was nicer than Steve the collections tyrant but she had no autonomy to make it up to me. I had to wait on hold for 15 minutes and go through 3 different departments before I could talk to anyone. You can't make any changes online (address, phone, etc) they practice archaic processes, and didn't even call my cell ONCE before sending me to collections and damaging my credit. Never again will I do business with these guys. It's too hard to be a good customer and I want to work with a company that has adapted to technology and actually rights its own wrongs. Take better care of your loyal clients who have many many banking options. Looking forward to refinancing with someone else.

Extremely Poor Customer Service and Allowing Fraudulent Activity
Several Months ago I deposited a check in my account from Westerra Credit Union. It was in the amount of $7,000 and was drawn to fix my grandmothers sewer line which had collapsed. After I deposited it they informed me the funds would be available in 10 business days. Huh? I've been banking here for several years, never a bounced check or overdraft and my funds are always available the next day. Michael the Manager sneers at me and says, "well with what you keep in your account, I can't do much for you." I guess I'm too small time for him to even pick up the phone and call the credit union to verify. His own customer service manager thought it was idiocy so she fixed it and I stayed.
In September two charges appeared on my account that I did not make. I filed a fraudulent claim and now after three months they tell me that they are not going to help me and I need to take it up with the website that charged me. Of course this is well past the time I can dispute it with the website so I will be reporting them to the FDIC. That $70 will be the last of my money they get.
Do not bank with them!Is this review helpful? -

They used to be a great bank -- now they just suck.
I have been with Bank of the West for over 15 years, the Walnut Creek branch people are great -- the Los Gatos branch is nice. The company itself has become horrific on charges fees, ones that you have never heard of before, and arbitrary. The Santa Cruz branch even tried to charge my wife $5 to cash one of my checks. I have been with them back when they were Central Bank, and were a nice small local bank. Now they have grown way to big, and just try to suck money out of you. Buy and spend local. I have moved all my accounts to a Local Credit Union.
