About the Bank

If you prefer a regional bank to a big bank, Key Bank may be what you’re looking for. Headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, Key Bank has more than 1,200 branches and more than 1,500 ATMs in 15 states across the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast. By assets, it’s one of the largest financial institutions in the U.S.

Key Bank has all the banking products and services you need to manage every aspect of your financial life. There are no less than six checking account options, ranging from a student checking account to Privilege Select Checking, which is an interest-bearing account that features unlimited foreign ATM surcharge refunds.

All of Key Bank’s checking accounts come with the option to enroll in Relationship Rewards. If you have a Key Bank debit card and a Key2More rewards credit card, you can earn points through everyday banking activities, such as paying bills, making ATM or mobile deposits or shopping at your favorite retailers. The Relationship Rewards program does carry an annual fee, although there’s no fee for Key Privilege and Privilege Select Checking customers.

This fee is assessed in addition to any monthly maintenance fee your account charges. The only account that doesn’t have a monthly maintenance fee is the KeyBank Hassle-Free Account. This account, however, doesn’t offer paper checks; it’s geared towards debit and online banking users. You also don’t have access to relationship benefits that some other accounts include, such as preferred rates for CDs and interest rate discounts on loans and lines of credit.

Key Bank also offers a variety of savings account options, including the Key Active Saver account for people who want a basic savings vehicle; Key Silver Money Market Savings, which offers higher rates for savers who maintain a minimum balance of $5,000; and Key Gold Money Market Savings, which reserves the highest rates for those with savings of $25,000 or more. A separate account is also available for kids under 18 who want to start the savings habit early. Like their checking accounts, these accounts also have a monthly fee, with the exception of the KEY4KIDS Savings account.

You can also save with Key Bank in a CD account. Short-term CDs are available if you want to save with a maturity term of seven days to six months. Tiered CD accounts offer tiered interest rates, based on what you save, with terms starting at six months. Jumbo CDs are an option if you’re a super saver who’s looking for a higher interest rate. These accounts require a $100,000 minimum deposit. All of Key Bank’s CD accounts are eligible to earn Relationship Rewards points when you open one.

You’ve got two credit card options to choose from, both of which feature a low introductory APR for balance transfers. If you want rewards, the Key2More Rewards card is the way to go. This card offers 5X points per $1 on eligible purchases for Key Bank Relationship Rewards customers, plus monthly rewards bonuses and a generous introductory points bonus. All of your Key Bank accounts can easily be managed through online and mobile banking.

They had deleted my account. An account that I had told them not to touch and to keep active. They could not fix there error and now I have to wait a week for a new card which I need to use daily. Customer Service Stress is what you get at KEY BANK

Had and issue with my account and I ended up freezing my account over the phone till it was resolve. I was referred to my local branch. Went to the branch to discuss and ask that the account be unfrozen only to be told they couldn't unfreeze it and would have to work on it with their backroom contacts. A week went by and no follow up. Called customer service again and they referred me back to the branch. Spoke to Branch Manager and she said she'll get it fixed and call me back. Next morning I had to call her again as she didn't call me back as promised. She fixed the problem over the phone. I took 2 hrs PL time from work and went to the branch and closed the account and moved my money to Liberty Bank Middletown CT. So much easier to deal with. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH KEY BANK... the customer service is deplorable.

Unfavorable experiences, numerous issues from lack of information. Would not recommend bank or branch.

Avoid this branch at all costs. I have repeatedly been given incorrect information from employees of this branch that has caused numerous delays and problems for me.

I opened an account and went into the branch to confirm they had all the appropriate information regarding my account because I needed to use the account in the near future. The manager said all information was correct and then immediately went into a sales pitch of more products I should try with KeyBank, I politely declined and told him I would rather see how this account worked before considering anything else, and I am glad I did. I then went to make a deposit and the teller said they could not accept the deposit because there was a hold on the account. I found that surprising because I just finished with the manager saying everything was correct. The manager told me he would call to find out the issue and then call me back to confirm it is fixed. I never heard back from that manager and no guidance was given.

I then had to call customer service to understand the issue which was for verification of an address, I went back into the bank with documentation and the account was verified. Then a week passed and I still had no debit card, I called customer service and was told it was never issued and they would issue it. The customer service representative also said that the branch should have offered to give me an ATM card in the interim that could be used for PIN purchases, which the branch did not even mention. I went back into the branch to request a card and finally make a deposit where I wrote a check to myself from another account. The teller (same one that did not accept the deposit before) told me that it was just an ATM card and could not be used for purchases. I found that clerk to once again be incorrect, I asked for the card anyways and that worked for the interim.

I called customer service a few days later because no debit card had arrived, they said that once again, no one from KeyBank had properly put the request in, so the person on the phone put it in again.

A week passed and my check still had not cleared despite the funds being taken from my other account the very day I handed KeyBank the check. I called customer service to ask about the delay, they said there was a verification hold on the check and it would be held for 15 days because it was a "large amount". The customer service representative told me that the clerk who took the deposit was supposed to inform me of the process. Of course, the clerk said nothing.

Needless to say I have been nothing but disappointed with the bank's lack of customer service, knowledge and follow up from the employees. Under no circumstance would I recommend this bank or this specific branch. You are much better suited to go to one of the nearby competing banks with properly trained employees and better service.

    Key Bank - Youngstown NY

    POSTED ON KEY FACEBOOK PAGE

Dear Ms. Mooney....I'm a Key bank business and personal customer via acquisition. At acquisition some of my accounts unfortunately went to Northwest and some to Key. As the owner of numerous small businesses over the past 37 years and currently holding accounts at many local and global banks I considered myself relatively experienced in day to day banking protocols but understand some banks may have different policies which sometimes can impact customer satisfaction. For my own privacy and security reasons I have always made company payable check deposits using a restrictive endorsement (no personal signature on the back) for every one of my company accounts, I have done this for thousands of deposits over many many years without incident. Many of them at the Youngstown branch before it was Key, First Niagara, HSBC, etc. Over the past several months I have been having problems only at this local branch. While trying to resolve this matter again yesterday, I had the unpleasant and demeaning opportunity to finally run into the Branch Manager, Melinda Smith at this branch in Youngstown NY who happened to be standing at a teller's window. This is the first time I've ever met Ms. Smith and the first time I've ever been talked down to by any bank personnel in my life. In this highly competitive marketplace Ms. Smith felt it was necessary to show her authority and provide me with a UCC education in front of her staff and other Key customers in our very small village. After seeing thousands of negative online reviews about Key bank and reading dozens of them I'm teetering on planning my exit from this bank. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

    Never use Keybank!

We used First Niagra Bank and loved the people, product and services until it became Keybank. My wife's mother recently passed away and there was financial business to be done. Wow what a fiasco! Not only were they seemingly unable to take care of the business, they were extremely rude and had 0 customer service relation skills. Bottom line, she went across the street to Citizens bank and they were more than willing to do all the things Keybank could not get done. The real bottom line? For their lack of professionalism and inability to reconcile funds in her mothers passing, she opened accounts across the street at Citizens Bank. Not only was Citizens bank kind and courteous, they went above and beyond to assist while my wife is grieving the loss of her mother. Hey Keybank! do you know you just lost over 150K by being total idiots? I have no crystal ball, however, I do not see great things for Squirrel Hill Keybank in the future. I have spoken to many people that are removing their funds and going elsewhere. We have closed our savings accounts and once all bills are paid, the checking is to follow. My suggestion, go to Citizens!

I have had my account over 2.5 years with Key Bank. I have never had overdraft fees my account was set up so that if funds were unavailable I wouldn't be charged. I have checking, and 4 savings including children's accounts. I made transfers over the phone from my savings to my checking often. I never had fees, but I made like 10 transfers over the last month, happened to look at my balance I was charged 150 dollars for each transaction. I had money in all savings had I know about the fees, I would have transferred from multiple accounts. Customer service rep waived one fee, and was going to help resolve never called back. I called today so I can close my accounts, they said I cant close it because of a negative balance. I feel that is fraud. I feel that a good bank, would contact me and say are you aware of your charges. Instead of letting me be charged ridiculously amounts of money just for transferring funds. The customer care team sucks. They seem to careless about you as a customer. I will be going to CHASE my mother always gets calls from them when, they seem more supportive.

Scarborough Maine Dishonest and Deceptive Bank. Making Sales is all that Matters.

Got an unsolicited Phone call from the Scarborough Maine Key Branch. They got me to move my CDs to their Bank promising a particular interest rate, come to find out after the account was open a month the rate was not what was promised and not what was on my paperwork. They also charged me a monthly maintenance fee of $50 on the checking account they made me open to get the supposedly better CD rate!

I am so mad about all the time that was wasted with these people. I had to go through the rigamarole of moving all my money back to my former bank and Key still would not refund the fees because they, "refunded too many customer's fees for the quarter and would get in trouble if they refunded anymore, but they are sorry" I will never deal with this bank again as long as I live.

I can not stress this enough, do not bank with them.

Sorry, I just deleted so much. I will try to temper my rage and distill it into "key" points - from smallest to worst

Constantly locked out if you use phone app and computer.

Short term CD took over 14 days to open - Day to sign up, week for them to mail signature card and for me to get it, another few days in the mail until Key got it back, numerous days before it posts. I can buy stocks, bonds, mutual funds, instantly over the internet. It took over 2 weeks to open a short term CD over the internet with Key. Rediculous.

Key Rewards - Holy jeese is this a bad program. I use Key as my primary checking account, and I have a credit card. For me to make back the 40 dollar annual fee for key, I would have to write/recieve 15 checks a month (that's the cap for getting points on checks/deposits) and then spend 48,000 dollars on your debit card to earn enough points for a 50 dollar gift card. They do not do anything besides 25 dollar or 50 dollar gift cards, and then Skymall level overpriced junk. So the only way to make it back is either spending a whole hell of a lot of money, or opening these CD's which are more of a pain and at such low rates that my USAA savings account beats them.

Service is terrible. I can't believe I am saying this, but I found the call center to be better than the people at the branch office. That's saying more about how bad the real people are than anything else. Everything, top to bottom, terrible. I hope they fail, and they are not bailed out, because they are not competetive with other bank.

oh almost forgot, they hold money as pending for far longer than any other bank. It's rediculous. You deposit it, in person, and maybe three days later you can have your money. God help you if you are trying to use some of that money lost in the pending limbo.

    Scarborough Key Bank is Terrible!

This is one of the worst branches of one of the worst banks. We have never liked Key Bank much but it seems like lately, they are nothing but a hassle. The staff is always new so nobody seems to know anything. We have to wait so long for the simplest requests and there's nobody in there. I sat and waited outside the manager's door for over 15 minutes while she chatted on the phone with what sounded like a personal call. I constantly have maintenance fees on my account and when I complain I am told they will fix it and I should not have fees again, then I get fees again and have to do it all over again. My daughter and her husband tried to refinance their house through Key bank and it took almost 3 months for them to tell her she is turned down after they already told her she was approved! I am changing banks before they waste any more of our time.

I could go online and manage all the accounts with one log in. Since the takeover, my banking world was upside down. Although after having to register twice to set up my personal account I could see the mortgage/loans and the house accounts, the business account was missing. I was informed I had to open a KOB account and then we could merge all the accounts. Because I could not get my business account enrolled online (because of a missing zero that doesn't exist on my tax ID)I could not get into my business account since the merger. After three trips to my branch (which are all wonderful people who tried their best), and several phone calls from me and them, we got the business account set up only to find their information can't be put into one account. And if I do a transfer from one account to the other online, it will take up to 4 days to go through. If it wasn't for the people at that branch, I would take all my business elsewhere. This bank started as a little local bank that has been through at least 5 takeovers in the past 18 years we've been using them. All the others went smoothly and the takeover was barely noticeable. Just a name change. I don't know how much worse everyday banking will be, but at this point, I spent more time at the bank this week than I have in the last two years.

    Poor and Indifferent Customer Service

On Friday, July 29th about 5:30pm, I brought my paycheck into the Keizer Station Key bank to be cashed. Though I do not have a Key bank account, I have cashed it there during the last year as my employer uses Key bank and their check is issued using Key bank. In the past, for a $5 fee, they have allowed me to cash my check using two pieces of identification. I have always used my drivers license and private health insurance card. On this occasion, however, the young man refused to honor my insurance card as proof of identification. He wanted me to open a "no hassle" account which would allow key bank to waive the check cashing fee. I declined and asked if another ID could suffice--AAA card, social security card, etc. He laughed.

He requested another bank card, visa, master card, employee ID card, or passport. I explained that my employer does not make employee ID cards available and that I was in chapter 13 bankruptcy. I have cancer and my wife lives in a state of permanent heart failure so we have many medical bills. Our court appointed trustee does not allow us to have credit cards. Regarding bank cards, I have a difficult time trusting banks. In 2010 we lost our home in the great recession due to Bank of Americas mishandling of our refinance for a modified loan. This nationwide mishandling of thousands was featured on a national news show. The day after we lost our home, the Federal government froze all modified loans from Bank of America. We were part of a class action suit and, along with many others, were awarded $2000, but that was little comfort for losing our children s childhood home located on the same cul-de-sac as our extended family., This Key bank teller finally allowed me to cash my paycheck this one last time and insisted it would not be cashed in the future without complying to their new rules.

The indifference of this bank teller toward my situation and his condescending attitude left me feeling foolish. His use of my plight as an opportunity to "sell" me another bank account left me feeling angry. His lack of empathy for those who experienced difficulty during the great recession is perhaps indicative of the reason that people like Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders find such a receptive audience of people who applaud the idea of breaking up big banks.

We have been customers at Key Bank for more than 25 years.

When we needed a line of credit we went to Key Bank because of their Brand Promise "A Response Within 48 Hours" .

This is a promise to either accept or reject an application for a line of credit with 48 hours.
It turns out they have no commitment to deliver on this at all !

Bryan Flaherty, AVP Key Bank says the Brand Promise is only to "let you know we are working on it" In other words a complete bastardization of the brand promise.

Bear in mind that we had ALL the required documents to them within 3 business hours of the application being filed and they said "yes we have everything we need"

When I asked to speak to someone above the branch level rep., I was give a non-functioning phone number.
When I called their 800# customer service they had no idea what a brand promise was. When I asked "Jay" for the contact info for the Market President in Maine he would have to get permission from his supervisor. When I asked to speak to the supervisor directly "jay" told that I could only do so if I promised not to record the conversation. At that point I gave up !
