Dozens of hidden Fees, beware of this bank
For more than 20 years we have been a customer with this bank with several accounts. Each year Webster Bank changes/modifies their means to charge you fees and it has become too much for us to deal with anymore. We will close all six of our accounts with this bank and move on to a bank that cares about it's customers. Do not be fooled by advertisements or commercials, this bank has deteriorated to an entity that will go to extremes in an effort to charge you a fee for something. Go elsewhere to bank.

Privacy Violation is their new Policy....
Around six weeks ago I had an overdraft on my account. It happens. I'm a small business owner and I had a rough couple of months. Luckily I have bounced back. Mind you this was my first overdraft on this account. I called their customer service number to ask if the overdraft fee could be removed as this was the first time this had happened. I was told that they would remove it but in order to remove it I had to agree to let them look through my account and assess if any changes could be made so it wouldn't happen again. I ultimately agreed as I really did need that fee removed. What happened next shocked me. This CSR started going through my account naming off all my charges. Example: "I see you pay monthly for Hulu. Maybe you could cancel that account or use a credit card to pay for it" This went on for ten minutes. Now this person on the phone didn't give me their credentials but my guess would be that he wasn't a Financial Adviser. I'm not even sure if this is legal even with my verbal consent. There is nothing embarrassing in my checking account but this still felt like a total violation of my privacy. What I spend my money on is none of Webster Banks business. My accounts are now closed with Webster and I have gone to a local Bank. When I went in to close my account at the local Branch the manager feigned concern and basically gave a shrug when I explained my reasoning for leaving. Which was no surprise as the staff of the local branch are very impersonal to begin with. I will never do business with this Bank again.

Very unprofessional and cruel
I opened two accounts (Checking Premier and Value checking) online last night and deposited two Citi bank's checks online using iPhone. Unfortunately, the checks were not activated by Citi bank. I have been a customer with Citi /Chase for at least 12 years but I did not know that I have to activate my checks. I never had to use them so I did not know. I called Webster bank to explain the situation. Rather than understanding my problem and let me open bank account they said that my account will be closed. I spoke to two ladies they told me that I can not open an account at all. What is this? Which age are you in? I will post my bad experience in various websites. I am an Engineering professional and a NY state employee but did not know that there are such cruel bank out there treating customer like this.

HSA bank acquired my health savings account from Chase. Trying to set up online banking with HSA has been nothing short of a nightmare. Taking Advantage Of A Valued, Long-Term Customer With Their Fees
I have had my personal checking/savings accounts with webster bank for over 15 years now. I have always praised webster bank even when other people put them down. Not anymore! I recently opened up a second checking account that they charge $10. 95/month for if you don't use your card 10x a month (which i was not aware of - i'm sure they told me but it must've slipped my mind). Anyway, because they were charging me this $10. 95 fee every month, it made my account go nsf and they decided to charge me $5/day in overdraft fees. It ended up costing me $80 in these ridiculous overdraft fees. I was recently laid off after working in the insurance industry for 8 years. I have a college degree and i had a great job. I have been struggling to find a job - applying to about 5 different places every day. On top of that, my husband and i are expecting our first child in a few months. Do you think webster bank cares that they are causing me this stress while i am pregnant and unemployed? Nope! They waived 4 of the fees totaling $20. So here i am still stuck with $60 in fees on top of the $10. 95 i was charged every month. You'd think they would make an exception for a long time customer going through a difficult time. But they obviously don't care. They apparently are so broke that they would rather lose me as a customer than refund my money. I will be closing my accounts tomorrow.

I was told by the mortgage underwriter Michele Raymond to go to my local Webster Branch (Hamden, Ct) and they could scan and fax to her the pages from a condominium documents book. When I arrived the Manager Limarie Rivera said "wow ther must be 100 pages" the bank I came from we would just overnight it tio the underwriter. I tolld her you are not at the bank you came from, you are at Webster this is what underwriting asked me to do so they could complete my mortgage application. After twenty minutes of excuse by Limarie Rivera saying she din't have enough staff, (ther were no customers in the bank during thev 20 minutes) she said it was TOO MUCH WORK for her. LAZY OVERPIAD MANAGER !!

SEVEN YEAR NIGHTMARE: Morgage Servicing is unfair and practices are legally questionable.
We are preparing to file action against this bank for years of torture. Seven years ago we were behind a month and, using unfair and deceitful practices, forced into an agreement that was not the modification we sought. Seven years and multiple complaints to regulators later, they are still at it. They refuse to provide information legally requested etc. They acquired our mortgage servicing when they bought a smaller bank. We are looking for others who may had had similar problems. Leave a comment and we will make arrangements.

Worst Lender Ever!
The only account I have with this so-called bank is a 2nd mortgage that I had to take out in order to purchase my townhouse. The 1st mortgage is with CitiBank, which I recommend.
A few years into this dysfunctional relationship Webster decided that my townhouse association management company did not carry sufficient hazard insurance and took out a policy on my behalf. According to Citibank, it's fine. According to the association management company and many, many neighbors who have various lenders, no on else in the area has this problem. Initially I talked to a customer service rep who told me she would take care of it and to only pay the mortgage amount. A few weeks after following her instructions, I received a robocall from Webster telling me that my loan payment was late. I called and was told the payment was held because it was not the correct amount. I explained the situation and was told not to worry, it would be taken care of. The robocalls continued and they tagged me as delinquent and reported it to the credit agencies. I called again and talked to someone who told me she was embarrassed by her employer and that this was not the first time this has happened. I paid the balance (she waived the late fee) but the credit reports still have me as a late payer for that time period. I've been paying this stupid hazard insurance for years.
I refinanced my first loan with Citibank three years ago and almost lost the rate because Webster would not respond to Citibank and would not provide information needed. The Citibank rep asked me if I could get through to someone there and I just laughed. Eventually Citbank got what they needed (cost me a few hundred dollars to get it from Webster). Webster then had the nerve to send me a Webster credit card! Citibank jumped all over me for having a new credit card and I promised the rep that I shredded it into little pieces. The refinance only happened because of Citibank.
I have been trying for years to get someone with authority from Webster to respond to my emails and phone calls regarding the hazard insurance, late payment report and refinancing the ridiculously high interest rate. (The house is upside down right now so CitiBank can't take it on.) I have not received the courtesy of an email or return call.
This is a horrible bank and I will be reporting it to all the appropriate parties. Please, for your own sake, do not get involved with Webster. It's horrible. No bank/lender is perfect, but this one has NO redeeming qualities.

Compliance policy's change depending on branch and teller
This bank has the worst ( if any) compliance policies. They change from visit to visit and branch to branch. Have had significant problems initiating POA's. Specifically the compliance dept is unfamiliar with common legal verbiage and how it is to be treated. They also have no understanding of Probate issues and language. The branches all call to verify with their compliance dept, however the compliance group changes requests and procedures depending on who takes the calls. Terrible communication and service.

Fees and more Fees - yet no customer service
We were forced into this bank as my company set up an HSA through their HSABank devision. I have been banking since I was 7 years old and never paid a fee for a bank to have my money. HSA/Webster wants a fee to send you statements and a fee for every month that you have less than a certain amount of funds in your HSA (keep in mind the contributions to HSA are government limited, with Webster increasing the minimum every few years it is difficult to keep out of the fee area if you ever use your HSA). In addition to a predatory fee schedule, they keep reducing the avenues to keep track of them. No more paper statement (without fee), no more direct access using Quicken, then recently stopped offering even the ability to download account activity in a Quicken format.
In addition to all that, I recently called them to work out some "oddities" and after suffering through their phone system was connect to a person who was either trying to screw with me or is in fact one of the stupidest people walking the plant.
All I can really say is that if must use this bank (like our company HSA) you have my sympathy. If you actually want to use this bank, then you would probably be better off paying someone a fee to hit you in the head with a baseball bat.
