About the Bank

At Ally Bank, the focus is on doing right by its customers. Though not the first online-only bank, Ally is credited as being one of the financial institutions that helped bring online banking into the mainstream.

When Ally began its transformation and first opened its online doors to customers, the initial focus was on offering high-yield savings accounts at competitive rates that outstripped brick-and-mortar banks. Those savings accounts remain one of the bank’s most attractive features but they’ve since been joined by a range of other financial products, including:

  • Interest checking accounts

  • Money market accounts

  • A variety of high yield certificates of deposit (CD) options, including no-penalty and Raise Your Rate CDs

  • IRA CDs for retirement savers

  • Auto loans

  • Mortgage and refinance loans

The Ally CashBack Credit Card, which allows you to earn cash back on purchases, while also snagging a cash back bonus when you redeem your rewards into an eligible Ally Bank Account.

One of the things that makes Ally the online bank of choice for so many people is its fee structure. For example, Ally doesn’t charge any monthly maintenance fees for savings accounts or its interest checking account. Overall, fees are relatively few and far between, with no incoming domestic or international wire transfer fees, no fees for standard or certified checks and no fees for overdraft transfers between linked Ally savings and checking accounts.

Ally offers comprehensive mobile apps that’s easy to use. With mobile deposit, you’re getting extreme generous deposit limits for an online bank. You get the ability to move money quickly between your Ally accounts and external bank accounts and easy personal payments to friends and family with a U.S. bank account through Zelle (for free). Finally, the mobile apps let have an ATM locator that show you nearby locations for free ATM access.

In addition to the traditional line of banking products and services, Ally sets set itself apart from the online banking competition with Ally Invest. This investing platform gives customers two ways to invest: through actively managed portfolios or self-directed trading. The platform is designed to encourage existing banking customers and people who may be considering making the switch to Ally to invest in a low-cost, transparent way. It suited to both experienced investors and first-timers who are still learning the ropes.

Ally prides itself on having a reputation for putting its customers first and offering maximum convenience. For example, customers have access to an extensive ATM network, which includes over 43,000 Allpoint ATMs across the country. ATM transactions within the network are free and Ally appeals to cost-conscious customers by refunding up to $10 in foreign ATM surcharges per billing cycle. The bank also created Ally Wallet Wise, a free financial education program, to help customers learn the basics of managing their money through online courses and live events.

We moved to Ally from BB&T (aka BB&Fee). Couldn't be happier!

Between ourselves, our children's UGMA accounts, trust accounts and a class reunion account, we have 9 deposit accounts to manage. When we left our brick & mortar bank, they were charging a monthly fee for online connectivity and we couldn't deposit checks via mobile app. That may have changed by now, but at that time, Ally's website and mobile app were light years ahead of BB&T. And instead of us paying the bank fees, the bank pays us! All of our accounts are interest-bearing and we haven't had to deal with minimum balance issues like we did at BB&T. The customer service, by phone or by chat on the website, has been quick & responsive. And I don't have to drive around town looking for my bank's ATM because we get reimbursed for ATM fees, regardless of which one we use!

In the 5 years that we've been with Ally, we've only has 2 occasions when it would have been nice to have a relationship at a local bank. One of those was needing a certified check or money order for a security deposit. That problem was solved by going to the post office. The other was when we had $1,000 in cash and no way to deposit it. On that occasion, I gave the cash to a relative who wrote me a check for the same amount and deposited the check. Unfortunately, that's not a problem we've had again! LOL

The only enhancement that I would like to see is a calendar that projects a running balance, taking into account scheduled payments and automatic deposits/withdrawals (similar to Quicken).

Great Bank. been with them for 5 yrs now...

i saw a litany of bad reviews about this bank on this site and would like to share my own experience which has been very different from most comments here. i have been with Ally for 5 yrs now, most of the complaints here are about loan/lease issues, since i never obtained a loan with Ally, i can only share my experience as a deposit customer. to me, Ally is an excellent bank. i received my interest and principal per information listed on their website. i never experienced the "bait and switch" stories as cited on this blog from other customers. contrary to "bait and switch", i actually received great customer service. just last year, my CD was locked into a certain rate % which i later decided i to get out but the CD has already 7 days past the "10 day open window" which i can change terms. by contract, i would not be able to make changes, including getting out. however, i called the customer agent and she heard my situation and promptly allowed me to exit from the locked rate. to me, this is excellent service and great empathy. the customer support line is opened during the hours i called, as late as 9pm, although i never tried to call them at 1am or 2am, i cannot tell if their customer service is 24/7. the phone agents were "average" to "good", definitely very polite. some agents can use a little more product training but overall, phone agents were trying to be helpful and polite. the internet portal is "good" but not "excellent". for example, you need to call in to transfer IRA moneys, cannot transfer IRA moneys online without agent supervision. the institution to institution transfer (e.g. Rollover, Conversion) can take a few more days to a week longer compared to other more established larger financial institutions (e.g. Vanguard, TD Ameritrade), however, given their higher than average Savings and CD rates %, i can deal with these minor issues. i do like their online portal. very user friendly, intuitive, easy to use. the bank offers Webroot Secure Anywhere Antivirus/AntiMalware for free (up to 5 devices). Webroot Secure Anywhere is one of the Top 3 PC Magazine "Editor's Choice" (2018) anti-malware which helps with my overall computer security. nice touch i like. finally, as depositor, even with FDIC insurance, the bank's safety and credit worthiness is very important. based on survey from respected bank rating agencies, Ally Bank receives very high ratings. for example, Bank Tracker (this site) found Ally Bank's "trouble asset" ratio is less than half of "national bank average", meaning the bank has been able to find good borrower and keep the default rate lower than "average" US banks. meanwhile, Bankrate.com rates Ally 5 Star, highest ratings in credit strength and liquidity. this is reassuring for depositing customers. in essence, i would love to deposit more money with them if there was not a FDIC insured limit customarily applies to every bank.

    Worst customer service ever experienced

I signed up for an ally bank account. I added my wife to the account, we got a letter stating that they needed her signature on a tax ID card either online or via post. Three was no way to fill it out online, so we sent it via US post. Two weeks latter I got the same request via US post again!. I called to ask whether they received my 1st letter. Two associates were incredibly rude and would not confirm whether they received a letter from me or not claiming it was private information that I was not privileged to. They were withholding information from me on my own account! So I proceeded to close my account. The customer service agent would not refund any interest gained on my savings account yet charged ~$200 penalty for closing my CD, after promising there would be no penalties. I asked to speak with a manager. The manager stated I would get my interest back but asked me to remain a customer. She said she needed to speak with my wife, so I gave her my wife's phone number. She called my wife, asked , her maiden name, address, etc all to confirm her ID. My wife answered all questions perfectly. She then asked for the terms of the CD that I opened! My wife had no idea so they said that someone else would call her. The next day someone else called me!!!!!!!! Morons! Problem still not resolved. Absolute worst and rudest customer experience ever. My account. I opened it. And they refuse to confirm whether they received a letter from me!! IDIOTS! Do not open an account with these people if you do not want your money put into a black hole! They withhold information from you that you provided, claiming it is private. They cannot get anything right. Agents are rude! I gave them $350,000 and have been treated like I am an insignificant irritant. They are rude , stupid, thieving bastards. They will take your money, not give you the interest you have earned, and charge penalties if you try to withdraw because you are unhappy with their service.

So far, my encounters with the customer representatives has been positive, they are helpful and not professional. I don't have any issues transferring my money. I am sure some did not have good experience but I guess it depends on what transaction you underwent. As far as an alternative to savings banking, I will say this is the way to go.

I authorized them to take the money out of another bank at the time I created the CDs. They took exactly the time to move the money, so it would lower my rate. They did not lock in the rate. WHAT A SCAM.
Now I am going to lose two months of interest, because at the end of that time, I will take the hit and move all the money, over 100K, out of their bank and close my account.

I can't do business with a bait and switch company like ALLY BANK.

The next month I went online to check the status and my account showed I had no payment due until 3/18 (it was 8/17). 2 weeks later I start getting collections calls saying I am past due. I explained what I saw on their website and they said sorry and charged me a late fee. They said the amount would reduce the amount of payments I had to make at the end. I decided to refinance at a lower interest rate. I got a 10 day payoff and sent the check 8/30. As of today, 9/6 they say they have not received the check that I must wait 7-10 business days. Every representative I have spoken with barely speaks English. It is very frustrating. I will never do business with this disorganized un-American company again.

I thought this was a little excessive since I have been a longtime account holder so I said what the heck and lifted the freeze on my credit. I heard nothing form them so I called on February 22nd to see what was going on. The person on the phone apoligized that they had not reopened the file after I lifted the freeze so I would have to lift the freeze again which I did. The next day I received a phone call telling me that they could not access my account and that unfreezing my account was not sufficient (even though I had followed this process to get a mortgage and they had no problem pulling my credit). They told me I needed to do a global lift, whatever that is. At this point I told them just to close the application. I immediately applied for a checking account with Discover bank where I also have an online savings account as was able to open a checking account in 5 minutes.

On Father's day someone ran a red light and hit her. She rolled a few times. She is still sore and has some issues but she is alive.
She had about five months left in the lease. The buy-out at the end was $22,000.00.
The insurance company is offering the current value of the Jeep which is well above the buy-out price. Ally is demanding ALL of the money from our insurance company, not just what was owed and the residual.
My insurance company said they have never experienced the problems they are having with Ally, nor have the ever heard of a finance company not giving the payoff amount but demanding all of the insurance money.
I contacted the dealership and spoke with the head of finance. He said in 30 years he's never heard of a company doing this.

I had set up a custodial account for my minor child. When he turned 18 and was going off to college we wanted to change this from a custodial to a joint account. On Aug. 11, 2012 I spoke to one of their representatives and was instructed to send a “letter of instruction” along with a copy of my son’s drivers license. This was done the same evening.
No notice from Ally. I followed up and was then told that I needed to send a copy of an envelope showing my son’s home mailing address. This was done on Aug. 23rd. I was told that I would hear something in 1 week.

No response from Ally. I followed up again and was then told that I now needed to fax a copy of his SS card. This was done on Aug. 31. They couldn’t find the fax and then asked that it be resent which was done on Sept. 5th.
Today I’m told that they have the necessary documentation and now after a whole month of waiting will begin the process of making the account changes.
Be prepared for many 3-4 minutes holds over many days. It’s impossible to speak to the same person twice or get anything accomplished.
Ally’s not a bad bank as long as you don’t need to speak to anybody or have anything done!
    Don

    Five stars by any measure

I'm confused about the the three-star rating when most of the reviews give a glowing five-stars - maybe there were a few folks who gave one star and that dragged it down? Anyway, as most people have noted, Ally is clearly the best way to go for online banking; and for those who are put off by the lack of brick-and-mortar locations, try thinking of banking differently. If you own a smartphone and a computer, there is absolutely no reason to "go to the bank"! Everything you might ever need to do can be done online and/or on the phone. Ally's phone reps are terrific - smart and patient, knowledgable about the products, and speak clear English (and possibly Spanish as well - I haven't checked). The no fee ATM feature is for real, and it's so convenient. It's also awfully nice to get nearly 1% interest on your savings account when virtually all the other banks give you next to nothing (like .005% or some nonsense, which is effectively zero). You even earn a bit on your checking account. No minimum balances, great online and mobile banking interfaces, great customer service: a winning formula, to be sure.
