  • Great cash back program for common, everyday spending
  • No annual fee
  • Ability to carry a balance
Cons
  • American Express cards less accepted

Plenty of Opportunities to Earn Cash Back

One benefit of using a credit card for everyday purchases is the ability to earn rewards.

While some credit cards will reward cardmembers with points or miles, the Blue Cash Everyday card from American Express rewards you with cash back.

The card's rewards program is as follows:

  • 3% cash back at U.S. supermarkets, on up to $6,000 per year in this category (1% cash back thereafter)
  • 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations, on up to $6,000 per year in this category (1% cash back thereafter)
  • 3% cash back at U.S. online retail purchases, on up to $6,000 per year in this category (1% cash back thereafter)
  • 1% cash back on other eligible purchases

The cash back comes in the form of a statement credit, which you’re eligible to redeem in increments of $25.

To maximize or accelerate your cash back earnings, add a family member as an authorized user and get additional cards. You’ll earn cash back on purchases they make, too.

Details on cash back categories

There are certain rules to be aware of when making purchases to qualify for the highest amount of cash back.

For "U.S. supermarkets," note that superstores and warehouse clubs are not considered supermarkets. Examples of excluded retailers include Amazon, Sam's Club, Wal-Mart, and Target.

For "U.S. gas stations," note that gas sold through superstores, supermarkets, and warehouse clubs will not qualify.

No Annual Fee

Another attractive feature of the is that while it offers cash back, there’s absolutely no annual fee.

Therefore, consumers won't pay a cost to keep the card in their wallets for the times when they can use it to maximize their cash back on spending.

Flexibility to Pay Over Time

If you’re familiar with American Express, then you know that some American Express cards require cardmembers to pay their balances in full every month.

Fortunately:

The Blue Cash Everyday card gives the option to carry a balance from month-to-month.

This card comes in handy when you’re purchasing an expensive item, and need a few months to pay off the balance.

Of course, it’s always best to pay a credit card in full each month. This is how you avoid long-term debt. And it’s also how you minimize interest charges. Even so, you may prefer the flexibility and option to pay over time.

Additional Card Benefits

Cash back isn’t the only attractive feature of the American Express Blue Cash EveryDay card.

Here are other protections and benefits you can expect from American Express.

1. Car rental loss and damage insurance

If you use your American Express Blue Cash Everyday card to rent a car, decline collision damage insurance at the rental car counter.

As a cardmember, you’ll receive car rental loss and damage insurance. This means you’re covered if the car is stolen or damaged in your possession.

2. Global assistance hotline

Anything can happen while you’re away from home. When you apply for the American Express Blue Cash Everyeay, you receive access to the global assistance hotline when you’re more than 100 miles from home.

3. Shopping and entertainment services

Another perk of the American Express Blue Cash EveryDay credit card is that you get free two-day shipping on eligible items purchased through ShopRunner. This is an American Express partner with a network of over 100 online stores.

In addition, cardmembers receive access to pre-ticket sales for different events. This includes tickets for Broadway shows, concerts, sporting events, and more

4. Fraud protection

There’s always the risk of your card ending up in the wrong hands.

You could lose it, or someone might steal your personal information. If this happens to you, know that you’re not held responsible for fraudulent charges.

If you lose your card or suspect fraudulent activity, notify us as soon as possible.

Final Verdict: Is the American Express Blue Cash EveryDay Card for You?

American Express is a well-known brand that’s accepted by more than 1.6 million places in the United States.

So if you’re looking for a credit card that offers cash back or points for everyday spending, is the right choice for you.

But one thing to keep in mind:

American Express isn’t as widely accepted as Visa or MasterCard. So some retailers might not accept this card as a method of payment. This can limit the amount of cash back you earn.

The more you use the card the better.

Even so, this credit card is ideal for those who not only use credit cards regularly but who also pay off their balances in full each month. Therefore, only charge what you can afford, and if possible, don’t carry a balance from month-to-month.
