Delta SkyMiles Gold Business American Express Pros & Cons

Pros Cons
  • Great travel perks such as airline fee credit, free checked bag, priority boarding and in-flight discounts
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • $99 annual fee, waived first year
  • No airport lounge perks

Simplified Rewards for Business Travel

The Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card offers unlimited miles on purchases, with two rewards tiers:

  • Earn 2 miles per dollar on eligible purchases made directly with Delta
  • Earn 2 miles per dollar on U. S. purchases for advertising in select media
  • Earn 2 miles per dollar on eligible U.S. shipping purchases
  • Earn 2 miles per dollar on dining at restaurants
  • Earn 1 mile per dollar on other eligible purchases

With no cap on the number of miles you could earn, this card could be highly rewarding for big spenders.

For example, if you spend $20,000 a year on Delta purchases, $20,000 on restaurants, shipping and advertising and $20,000 on office supplies you'd earn 100,000 miles. You could then use those miles to book award flights with Delta or transfer them to one of Delta's travel partners.

This card also has an impressive introductory welcome offer, which could help you rack up additional miles.

You'll need to meet the minimum spending requirement but that may not be difficult if you're charging purchases for business regularly.

Notable Travel Perks

The Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card includes several Delta travel benefits that could save your business money.

$100 Delta Flight credit

In any calendar year when your purchases reach $10,000, you can receive a $100 Delta flight credit.

This credit can be applied to a future flight with Delta, including the airfare portion of a Delta vacation package.

This credit, alone, can make up the cost of the card's annual fee.

First checked bag free

Your first checked bag aboard Delta flights is free, saving you up to $60 per ticket on round-trip flights.

This waiver is also good for up to nine passengers per flight reservation.

Priority boarding

As a cardmember, you enjoy Main Cabin 1 priority boarding on Delta flights.

This benefit also covers up to nine passengers traveling on the same reservation.

In-flight discounts

If you make in-flight purchases on Delta using your card you can get 20% savings. This savings shows up as a statement credit on your account.

Considering that the regular annual fee is just $99, those features make the card seem like even more of a bargain. Earning the $100 Delta flight credit alone each year is another to cancel out the fee.

What Else Do You Get With the Card?

The Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card also includes some other features business travelers may find valuable.

  • Baggage insurance plan
  • Global Assist Hotline access

The Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card has a nice mix of rewards and perks overall.

However:

Fees

There aren't a lot of fees to worry about with this card.

The biggest is the $99 annual fee (see Rates & Fees; terms apply).

But compared to some travel rewards cards, this is pretty reasonable when you consider the rewards and benefits the card offers.

Business Credit Cards vs. Personal Credit Cards

Business and personal credit cards can both be used to make purchases and earn rewards. But there are a few things that make them different from one another.

With a business credit card, for instance, the rewards you earn are typically geared toward business purchases. So you might get points for charging office supplies or advertising, for example.

A personal credit card, on the other hand, may offer points or cash back at grocery stores or department stores.

The card perks are usually different, too.

Instead of business lounge access at the airport, your personal travel rewards card might offer personal lounge access instead, or no lounge benefits at all.

Both cards can affect your personal credit history. While business credit cards are reported to business credit bureaus, applying for one can trigger an inquiry on your personal credit.

And if you default on a business credit that you used your Social Security number to apply for, delinquencies can show up on your personal credit as well.

Applying for a business credit card

If you're ready to apply for a business credit card there are a few things the credit card company will need from you.

To complete the application, you'll need to provide:

  • Your name
  • Business name
  • Personal and business addresses
  • Personal income
  • Business revenue
  • Number of employees
  • Years in business
  • Business type

Can you get a business credit card when you have no business history or revenue?

Actually, you can.

The credit card company uses your personal credit score and financial information to approve you, instead of your business details.

You can apply for business credit cards online just like you would a personal card.

If you haven't checked your personal credit score lately, you may want to do that. It can give you an idea of which cards you're most likely to qualify for.

Final Verdict

The could be a good choice for business travelers who fly with Delta frequently.

This card's annual fee doesn't break the bank and it comes with enough benefits to offset the cost if you're using it regularly.

On the other hand, you may prefer another card if you're looking for a higher rewards rate or luxury travel perks. The trade-off, of course, is that you may end up paying a higher annual fee for those kinds of benefits.

Bottom line:

The Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card could be best suited for Delta loyalists who want to earn miles without a steep fee.
